"I HATE gentrification but LOVE the policies that cause it" will never not be such a funny type of person

It’s 2026 and we’re still asking if better transit *causes* gentrification. Come on.

The term “gentrification” might have been useful at one point but its current use seems to be something along the lines of “it’s ontologically bad when neighborhoods racially integrate and/or add amenities, but leftistly”

Block club prints two housing stories:
1. Residents demand action to stop rising rents and gentrification
2. Community members concerned by new housing proposal
With rents increasing by 40-60 percent, neighbors in Logan Square want to see more protections for renters. buff.ly/UsJjcWx

According to the amenity theory of gentrification, the city should burn tires in poor communities in order to keep rents low.
It’s 2026 and we’re still asking if better transit *causes* gentrification. Come on.

Not building new housing (in ALL neighborhoods) is going to make gentrification worse.

But that would be gentrification of the curb, I fear.

A friends ex girlfriend wrote a dissertation like this. The thesis was “planting trees in black neighborhoods is bad because gentrification”

The problem is that in NIMBY Left discourse "built a bunch of a housing" = GENTRIFICATION and TRANSPLANTS
what's so strange to me about this critique is that even if you concede that "build build build" puts money into the hands of people who benefit from the status quo, at the end of the day you have also built a bunch of housing.

Putting aside my feelings on the gentrification of mahjong, “"Paxton represents what they don't want from their husbands” is an incredible sick burn and also makes me worried for their marriages.

Gentrification is caused by not building housing, the empiric evidence is very strong here

Something hilarious about people most "upset" about "gentrification" are textbook "gentrifiers".

“We shouldn’t improve things” is indeed a trope in “gentrification” discourse. But -

Gentrification is a real issue, but the solution is to build enough housing everywhere, so that prices normalize, discouraging it.

Speaking of millennial optimism are people just going to complain about gentrification forever

No I suspect that’s a very very likely motivating factor. I’m being responsible in not speculating but that was my first interpretation m. Standard gentrification strategy.

Gentrification, budget cuts and NIMBYism in action
I love all the weirdly specific lore of Wuhu Island in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. What happened to the indigenous people? Why was a lighthouse divisive? There were budget restrictions? How do they know so much about the sand? It feels both fantastical and grounded at the same time.
