The sense of superiority some German commentators continue project when discussing Taurus-related geodata is hard to comprehend.

While Germany has been a technological leader in many fields, cruise missile guidance is not an area in which it holds a unique or indispensable advantage.

3/ With their full names in hand, tracing their whereabouts on Russian social media was relatively easy. One mercenary in particular, Enriquez Linares Livan Michel, proved especially useful. His social media profile contained both photographs and geodata.

If you're a Spotify user who is finding the microgenre & geodata of your annual "Wrapped" to be less substantial than usual, there's a reason why.

A year ago, Spotify laid off most of its employees who worked on genre classification, including folks like data alchemist @glennmcdonald.bsky.social.

Great #geodata thread
Lovely example of how weird real-world data is. I put all 55 million points in Overture maps into a Nomic Atlas map. Lots of points spuriously appearing in the ocean. But the 1° square around 'null island' (0° lat, 0° long) is suspiciously clear -- someone has cleared out bad data just there.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 Trump administration’s agreement on US access to Ukrainian natural resources will not benefit Ukraine for the next 10-15 years, — FT

❗️The reason is war, classified geodata, destroyed infrastructure. Even in the oil and gas sector, investors are in no hurry to invest without clarity on ceasefire

For those saying that Taurus can only be made to work with German geodata: Why would countries like Spain and South Korea agree to import the system if this was the case? Naturally, they have a need to use their own geodata and would otherwise not have imported it. 16/22

This is like russians doing selfies in ukraine with geodata still on then wondering how the artillery is so accurately hitting them
a guy currently on a nuclear submarine was playing crusader kings 3, bragged about it on the subreddit for the game, and leaked his location. it may not match the war thunder forums in quantity but it’s up there in quality

Update (3pm ET on February 5th): the Census FTP site, including the ACS flat files and TIGER/Line shapefiles, is back up!

This means that your #rstats / #Python Census geodata packages are now working as normal.

The way that o3 can guess locations feels very science fictional, down to the “zoom, enhance” tools it applies to an image.

This is sped up, but it guessed the location from a photo I just took with geodata removed and no clear signage drawing on the vegetation & highway columns.

A PSA for US Census geodata users: while the TIGER/Line shapefiles are inaccessible, all Census geographies are still up via the TigerWeb API

Endpoints are here: tigerweb.geo.census....

Use @JosiahParry's {arcgislayers} package to pull them into #rstats with minimal fuss

Fun fact: the lake and background mountains around Hinterberg were created with geodata from Hallstatt's own lake and its surroundings.

PSA: Alphabetical order is often bad for geodata! I took the data from the WSJ article below and used a more natural geographical order; it makes it possible to see regional measles epidemics in 1935-36, the western polio outbreak, etc. Interactive notebook. observablehq.com/d/53c696e100...
