It's too bad I feel like I need to note that about work of the National Geodetic Survey.

Always love finding these. US Coast & Geodetic Survey. $250 fine or imprisonment for tampering.

Another one of the non-weather things that NOAA does. The National Geodetic Survey is actually the oldest part of NOAA.
AND it appears the NGS website is down too.
SCOOP from me: the mass exodus of employees from NOAA is decimating a tiny office that literally keeps our measurements of latitude and longitude accurate — and, former employees tell me, endangers the science of how the US understands global measurements:
Trump Cuts Are Killing a Tiny Office That Keeps Measurements of the World Accurate
A tiny but crucial agency that maintains physical coordinates like latitude and longitude in the US is struggling as the Trump administration forces out federal employees.

Two of the most reliable indicators of Earths Energy Imbalance (NASA CERES satellite and Geodetic, ocean heat estimates) show that the near-term forcing increase might be much higher than models suggest.

The 19th century Struve Geodetic Arc is, to me, one of the most extraordinary properties on the World Heritage List. It crosses 10 countries and was used to determine the size and shape of the world. 🧪 🏺 #ContemporaryArchaeology
Struve Geodetic Arc
The Struve Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These are points of a survey, carried out between 1816...

The National Geodetic Survey is also the oldest scientific agency in the US.

Fischer was the first woman at her agency to win the Distinguished Civilian Service Award.

Her structural equations laid the foundation for the World Geodetic System, which engineers later used to build the satellite network powering modern smartphone GPS. Born #OTD in 1907.

The National Geodetic Survey is at risk
A tiny federal agency is tasked with maintaining vital spatial information -- things like latitudes, longitudes, even measurements of Earth’s gravitational field.

Trump's cuts to that agency might literally make measurements of the world less accurate.

Based on these NASA CERES and geodetic (=gravity) satellites based observations and comparison to CMIP6 models, I think @simonoxfphys.com falsely portrayed 3°C as an 'intentionally scaring, illegitimate 'doomer' scenario'.

It's a substantial risk, which we have the (moral) obligation to communicate

On #GISDay, we honor Dr. Gladys West, the genius mathematician whose 1970s–80s geodetic modeling of the Earth laid the foundation for GPS. Her work on SEASAT & GEOSAT gave us the precise geoid that makes every #geospatial app reliable today. #wow 😮 #WomenInSTEM
