Geodynamo Mystery - Inside Earth’s Restless Core: Geomagnetism? Churning iron outer core powers the #geodynamo creates our protective #magnetic field, and why subtle shifts - like field weakening and past magnetic reversals matter. #Geomagnetism.

If you could see our planet's inner magnetism, it would look like this geodynamo simulation. Turbulence in the outer core (red/blue) changes the field (orange).

Abrupt changes down there create noticeable "jerks" in the magnetic field that we experience up top. 🧪

Pigeons' use their livers to sense variations in the geodynamo of the Earth's Core.

That is what this is on one level saying.
Researchers have identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation.

the fact that Earth's outer core is liquid is the reason why our planet has a magnetic field. Earth's core is made of a molten mix of nickel and iron, and the convection in it causes a flow of charge. the result is a geodynamo, generating magnetism that keeps us safe from hazardous cosmic particles
I've always been fascinated by Earth's interior and how scientists have described their textures. I decided to make my own slice while at @newsela.bsky.social. #geology, #earth, #platetectonics

A study in Communications Earth & Environment show that the transfer of ions from Earth’s atmosphere to the Moon is efficient only in the sustained presence of a geomagnetic field, suggesting that lunar soils may record the histories of the atmosphere, solar wind, and geodynamo. 🔭 ⚒️ 🧪
Terrestrial atmospheric ion implantation occurred in the nearside lunar regolith during the history of Earth’s dynamo - Communications Earth & Environment
Numerical simulations reveal that the transfer of ions from Earth’s atmosphere to the Moon is efficient only in the sustained presence of a geomagnetic field, suggesting that lunar soils may record the histories of the atmosphere, solar wind, and geodynamo.

Not only could geomagnetism influence what happens on the Earth's surface — the converse could also be true: The structure of the crust could feed back on convection in the Earth's core, affecting the 'geodynamo' that produces the magnetic field 🤯

Invariance of dynamo action in an early-Earth model - Nature
Early-Earth geometry models are presented, producing magnetic field intensity and morphologies agreeing with palaeomagnetic data in the deep past and demonstrating the negligible role of fluid viscosity in the Earth’s early geodynamo.

The Earth's magnetic field is generated by vigorous convection in the outer core through a process called the geodynamo. We simulate this process on big supercomputers and can reproduce a lot of the features of the Earth's magnetic field!

people rightly mocked pepsico for spending a million dollars on that late night cocaine induced marketing doc from the mid 2000s

but honestly, all this time later, whenever i see a pepsi or think of logo design, i am reminded of the majesty of the document

so perhaps it was worth it in the end

it gets better

a quarter of the time, literally 1/4th of the time,
the moon is *inside* the magnetopause. Meaning the moon *crosses* the boundary of the Earth's geodynamo twice per month

Reported USGCRP director Matthew Wielicki published 13 papers between when he started grad school in 2008 and when he stopped publishing in 2021

Fun fact: My Matthew Wielicki number is 2. One of his last papers comes out of the lab of a grad school labmate and co-author of mine

Mars atmosphere stripping is mostly related to the end of the Martian geodynamo-induced magnetic field.

Earth's atmosphere is more controlled by interactions with the mantle (volcanic outgassing balances within measurement error with what's returned to the mantle at subduction zones).

And they never do!

This is why it's important to collide a large number of iron-nickel asteroids with Mars!

...to restore the Martian geodynamo of course.

The re-establishment of a global magma ocean is a *completely* unintended consequence.

Completely.
