One of my fav. photos I took this yr & that was BEFORE I learnt about the vision, the UN inspiration, & the rest. (See AltTxt.) Now, kinda obsessed w #ArtMurals.

A vibrant, high contrast photo of a massive art mural in downtown Houston entitled "Innovation for All" by Guatemalan-born, Houston-based street artist Gelson Lemus, widely known as w3r3on3. Google explains the details, background, & inspiration of this public arts initiative mural better than I could: "Curated and produced by the non-profit organization Street Art for Mankind (SAM) as part of their city-wide "Big Art. Bigger Change" public art initiative, the piece is deeply inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9, which targets industry, innovation, and infrastructure. The painting depicts a colossal, stylized hand intertwined with digital circuitry reaching upward to grasp planet Earth, which is unlocked by a small golden key. The aesthetic lines of the technological web purposefully extend the visual architecture of the building, carrying a significant global message regarding the critical need to bridge the digital divide, promote sustainable industries, and share scientific advancement equitable across all social boundaries." The overarching "Big Art. Bigger Change." initiative has brought together local and international artists to transform large-scale corporate and vacant walls across downtown Houston into vibrant landmarks highlighting social and environmental justice. Visually, the shot focuses on a striking urban landscape dominated by a massive, futuristic mural painted on the side of a multi-story building, contrasting sharply with the surrounding dense architecture. The scene is defined by a rigorous interplay of linear and geometric shapes, seen in the grid-like windows of the background skyscrapers, the tiered balconies of a neighboring complex, and the exposed structural framing of the mural building's facade. This rigid geometry is juxtaposed against the fluid, cosmic art style of the mural, which depicts a large hand cradling a glowing globe amidst digital streaks. The lighting of the photography emphasizes deep, drama…

The aerodynamics of building #skyscrapers in cities w/ hurricanes: A curving design diffuses intense frontal wind loads.

#WindowsOnWednesday #ECK #TextureTuesday #Architecture #Photography #Photographers #CityScapes #GeometricShapes #Reflections #ColorADay #BlueTue
A close-up abstract architectural photograph captures the dynamic, curving, and very blue facade of a modern skyscraper, emphasizing its striking geometry and repetition of form. Sharp, dark grey metallic structural ribs sweep gracefully across the frame from top to bottom, creating deep perspective lines that draw the eye into a sharp, sweeping curve. Between these prominent parallel lines, large panels of reflective glass are tinted in vibrant shades of turquoise and cyan, mirroring the sky and casting geometric shadows across the surface. Engineering-wise, this curved design is not purely aesthetic; it serves a crucial function in aerodynamics and structural mechanics. The curvature helps deflect and redistribute wind loads more efficiently than a flat surface, reducing the lateral forces acting on the building.

One of my fav. #skyscrapers, Heritage Plaza, with its delightful identity crisis, wishing secretly that it were an ancient Mayan temple in the Yucatan.

#UrbanGaze #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #GeometricShapes #Reflections #ColorADay #BlueTue #ECK
Heritage Plaza, a prominent 762 ft tall skyscraper in downtown Houston. Completed in 1987 and designed by M. Nasr & Partners, the building is, as Google explains, "highly celebrated for its distinctive Postmodern architectural style. The significance of this style is showcased in its playful departure from traditional flat-topped skyscrapers, utilizing a stepped gray granite crown inspired by the ancient Mayan pyramids of the Yucatán Peninsula. This merging of historic Mesoamerican geometry with a modern glass curtain wall stands as an iconic monument to the expressive freedom and historicism characteristic of the Postmodern movement." For the visually impaired, this is an upwards-looking, low-angle, full vertical shot of the the towering Heritage Plaza skyscraper, soaring into a blue sky streaked with light wispy clouds and a sharp white contrail. The building’s modern façade is composed of a vast grid of dark blue, reflective glass panes that create a dominant pattern of crisp vertical and horizontal lines. These mirrored surfaces catch distorted green and brown reflections of neighboring high-rises, adding layers of geometric texture. The skyscraper tapers slightly as it ascends, drawing the eye upward to its distinctive, postmodern crown modeled after a Mayan pyramid, featuring stepped limestone-colored tiers and deeply recessed vertical columns that contrast sharply with the smooth glass body below.

A close-up abstract photograph captures the geometric intersections and highly reflective exterior panels of the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, part of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The image showcases a sharp corner where vertical, matte grey wall panels meet dark, deeply reflective glass windows that mirror a vivid blue sky overlayed with soft textures. Peeking along the top edge are the ends of translucent, undulating semicircular glass tubes. This striking facade is an example of contemporary sustainable architecture, specifically designed by Steven Holl Architects. A key component of the exterior is the "cool jacket" (or cold jacket) facade. This consists of ventilated glass tubes that create an open cavity allowing hot air to passively rise and escape out of the roof, lowering solar heat gain by roughly 70% in the intense Texas heat. Overhead, the building features a unique scalloped canopy roof whose concave curves were directly inspired by billowing Texas cloud circles. This "luminous canopy" pushes down on the geometry to perfectly filter and slide natural light into the top-lit art galleries below.

Psychedelic Surrealism, Geometric Cubism, & Mesoamerican Indigenous art by Daniel Anguilu. (See AltTxt)

This is a vibrant colour photo of a 2-3-block long art mural of which this is a tiny crop section. The art mural is by a local Houston graffiti pioneer Daniel Anguilu. Anguilu’s signature murals are highly recognizable landmarks across Houston. This one is in The Heights area. Google has the coolest art description of the artist: "His work frequently centers on stylized animals, cosmic imagery, and abstract shapes rooted in deep cultural meaning. The Artistic Style: Neo-Cubist Geometric Abstraction This style merges traditional street graffiti with elements of modern abstract movements: • Geometric Cubism: The artist maps out organic forms—such as a skull or protective face—using fractured, kaleidoscopic triangles and facets. This technique creates a sense of shifting dimensions and depth on an otherwise flat wall. • Mesoamerican & Indigenous Folk Art Influence: The heavy, black geometric outlines and bold color blocks draw deep inspiration from Mexican and pre-Columbian folk patterns, a frequent hallmark of Chicano street art. • Psychedelic Surrealism: The juxtaposition of intense, prismatic rainbow bands alongside deep-space, starry voids within the eyes roots the piece in spiritual and cosmic surrealism.

Hindu #architecture is in a league of its own. Every angle is a lesson in sacred geometry & flawless craftsmanship & engineering.

A dramatic black-and-white photograph captures a low-angle, leading-line perspective of a grand Hindu temple, specifically showcasing its highly detailed marble staircase and ornate architectural design. In the foreground, wide marble steps with dark, polished geometric inlay lines run diagonally from the bottom left toward the mid-ground, flanked by an intricately carved balustrade featuring detailed pillars, floral motifs, and tiered patterns. The staircase guides the eye upward toward the temple's structural upper levels, revealing a beautifully carved archway, an embellished dome, and a prominent, towering shikhara (spire) topped with a fluttering ceremonial flag. In the background, a stark contrast is created between the classic, elaborate ancient-style temple carvings and a clean-lined, modern building under a dark, moody sky filled with dramatic, sunlit cumulus clouds.

#Architecture #SensoryArt #ClassicMono #MinimalMonday #ECK #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #GeometricShapes #UrbanGaze #BWphotography
A high-contrast vertical shot of the walkway outside of the main museum building of the Menil Museum campus in Houston TX. The campus spans 30 acres & 5 primary art buildings: the Main Museum Building, the Menil Drawing Institute, the Cy Twombly Gallery, Richmond Hall (featuring an installation by Dan Flavin), and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel. This main museum building was designed by Renzo Piano. Visually, this striking photograph captures a long, covered outdoor walkway running alongside the central building, emphasizing strong geometric forms. The walkway is shielded by a dramatic, undulating canopy composed of repeating curved fabric or plaster panels that mimic waves, supported by a neat row of tall, slender rectangular columns extending deep into the background. The composition is dominated by sharp linear angles and intense contrasts between light and shadow, as a bright source of light from the side casts deep, hard-edged geometric shadows across the smooth concrete pathway and along the horizontal siding of the adjacent building.

#LinearArt #AOFoto #Architecture #LightAndShadow #UrbanGaze #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #Architecture #GeometricShapes #SensoryArt #Buildings #ECK
A colour photo showcases a striking view of the KBR Tower in downtown Houston, framed prominently by the sharp angles of a modern, overhanging architectural structure in the foreground. In the background, the skyscraper's distinct pinstripe architecture dominates the vertical plane, using alternating stark black and white lines to create a dramatic sense of repetitive, towering height. The photo utilizes powerful light contrasts and geometric angles, capturing deep shadows underneath the foreground canopy that contrast sharply with the sunlit green grass and bright exterior panels. A massive circular column anchors the right-center of the composition, leading the eye upward past metal sunshades and toward the towering verticality of the background cityscape.

"The beauty of #Skyscrapers, Exhibit 40, your Honor."

Spanish Rose granite; gold-pink windows in an accordion style; & a step-pyramid in the Mesopotamian Ziggurat-style of all things!

#AoFoto #Architecture #ECK #UrbanGaze #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #GeometricShapes
A photo of Enterprise Plaza (also known as 1100 Louisiana) in downtown Houston, Texas. Designed by legendary international architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), working in association with 3D/International architects, and completed in 1980, the skyscraper features a dramatic, stepped orientation that slopes progressively downward at its base, creating a tiered, ziggurat-like profile. The main tower rises as a massive, undulating vertical structure with deep, repeating fins that run continuously from top to bottom, providing striking geometric depth and strong shadow lines. The juxtaposition of the sharply angled, stepped foreground against the curved, ripple-patterned high-rise highlights the building's Late Modernist focus on scale, repetition, and intersecting geometric forms. Visually, this is a low-angle, upwards-looking photo highlights a striking juxtaposition of geometric patterns, colors, and textures between two architectural structures. In the foreground, the stepped, staggered concrete structure creates a sharp, block-like diagonal silhouette defined by dark square windows and a gridded stone tile facade. In contrast, the backdrop features a soaring curtain wall skyscraper composed of highly reflective, metallic gold-tinted glass panels. The building's accordion-like, faceted surface folds outward in repetitive vertical pleats, amplifying the play of warm light and complex geometric shadows across the entire scene.

#LightAndShadow #ClassicMono #UrbanGaze #ECK #Photography #Photographers #BWPhotography #BnW #GeometricShapes
A high contrast black-and-white photo of the soaring multi-level atrium of the Nancy & Rich Kinder Building at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The composition frames the dramatic architecture of master architect Steven Holl, who purposefully modeled the structure's iconic "luminous canopy" roof after the billowing clouds and expansive "big sky" of Texas. Deep shadows sharply contrast with diffuse, ethereal light slicing downward across the organic, concave curves of the ceiling. These rolling contours function as natural light reflectors, sliding soft illumination down into the central gallery forum and highlighting the sweeping curves of the upper-level balconies below. The sharp, converging V-shape anchoring the bottom-left of the frame serves as a powerful focal point that anchors the entire image, giving the structural mass a gravity-defying weightlessness. This dramatic chevron effect is created by the intersecting slopes of Steven Holl's custom ceiling planes, which funnel the eye upward into the soaring volume of the Kinder Building atrium.

For this wk's #3rdPlace theme, my happy place: the streets in front of cool #architecture, esp. before my beloved #skyscrapers, with my camera in hand.

#ClassicMono #StreetPhotography #LightAndShadow #UrbanGaze #Photography #Photographers #BWPhotography #BnW #ECK #GeometricShapes
An upwards-looking, low-angle, vertical black-and-white photograph captures a soaring modernist skyscraper with a complex, geometric glass-paneled facade. The architecture features a stepped design where a wide, grid-like lower structure sharply recedes, giving way to a narrow, soaring tower that climbs dramatically toward the top of the frame. In terms of photographic style, the image uses high-contrast monochrome tones and intense, low-angle perspective to emphasize the building's monumental scale and sharp lines. The striking nature of the building comes from its deeply reflective surfaces, creating strong light contrasts as dark, grid-patterned glass mirrors soft white clouds, juxtaposing rigid industrial engineering with the organic movement of the sky.

A high contrast, dramatic, vertical, sunset shot of the Chevron Headquarters (formerly the Enron Center) skyscrapers at 1400 Smith Street and 1500 Louisiana Street, the two connected by an elevated circular pedestrian skybridge in downtown Houston. The complex was designed by the internationally renowned architect César Pelli in a sleek, highly articulated Postmodern style. Completed in 2002, the lozenge-shaped tower is wrapped in reflective glass and features a dramatic circular skybridge that intentionally breaks from the standard local street grid.

Photo of a striking modern glass skyscraper shot from a dramatic low-angle perspective, emphasizing its soaring verticality against a turbulent, dark sky. The architecture is defined by its clean, geometric lines and a grid-like curtain wall of blue tinted glass panels that form sharp, overlapping rectangular volumes. The defining characteristic of the image is its intense contrast; the deep, brooding storm clouds create a moody backdrop that sharply contrasts with the skyscraper's reflective surface. Bright sunlight pierces through the gloom, catching the edges of the building to create brilliant, glowing highlights, while casting deep shadows across its recessed sections.
