Occidental has a play on this with their fracking wells. Smaller scale heat/power at just 2km deep, but geotherm is a continuum and there are multiple plays appearing.

Huh, under lithostatic pressures, water can stay water-as-we-know-it (it's a vapor or a liquid) to about ~375 degrees C. Past that it's a supercritical fluid.
An average geotherm will hit that temperature at 15-18 km depth. A volcanic arc geotherm might hit that temperature closer to ~8 km depth.

This is also what I talked about on stage at #Deploy24. That there is a missing middle in US clean energy innovation activity: building a bunch of small/pilot activities (in LDES, CDR, reconductoring, industrial, geotherm) in the $5-$200M range, & sensor everything as innovation learning projects.

Some things you can only do in space, like IR astronomy that doesn't penetrate the atmosphere, or look down at the Earth to spy on it. But generate electricity? No one cares where it comes from. If solar satellites work out better than geotherm or nuclear, fine. But they absolutely might not

as a physicist i twitch a little when people talk about free energy, but from the perspective of most people i guess solar, wind and geotherm are free energy forever because they wont go away for millions and millions of years. and yes, that does obliterate the idea of energy for ever greater profit
