While in Libya I visited ancient Ghadames. The town complex had many dwellings with a shared roof which was the domain of the women. If he thinks the ancient world kept women apart he's cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

I woke up thinking about Ghadames šăgg 2s.m (independent) / -šək (direct object) and have been in a bad mood ever since. Nothing is right there.

1. š forms for 2sm are typically Zenatic (or in dialects where every k>š) and have nothing to do in Ghd

2. in Ghadames g>ǧ except in loans. And here.

Still there are quite a number of toponyms that are less easily interpreted as Berber, like, in the Rif, the rivers Kert, Melwiyt (Moulouya, already attested in antique sources) and the mountain Gur(u)gu.
Similarly a name like Ghadames (Latin Cydamus) is not obviously Berber, etc. etc.

Zwara (86 respondents!);
Eastern Nefusa (27 from Nalut, 11 from Jado)
Western Jebel Nefusa (10 from Al Qal3a and 4 from Yefren)
Ghadames (10) - I left this out of the equation.

As shown by @lameensouag.bsky.social, there is a major dialect border between eastern and western Nefusi if you look at phonological and morphological things. Eastern Nefusi and Zwara are relatively “normal” Zenati dialects, Western Nefusi may be a dialect mixture between Ghadames and Zenati.

Putting a bit more Afro- in this:

> aḥăr (Tamažǝq)
> aβōr (Ghadames)
> war, ar (Zenaga)
> ar (Ouargla)
> war (Mzab)
> 'arwe (Ethiop)
> ār (Somali)
> aruwo, arfu (Tchad)

Proto-Berber : *ā-Hāhār , *ā-Hāhūr ?

It's #WorldLionDay!

Afro-Asiatic has two words for lion: *labiwʾ/*libawʾ and *ʾariw/*ʾawVr. With (at least written) Egyptian and (at least written) Minoan collapsing r/l, it's hard to know which of those is behind Egpytian (probably *ʾariw) and which behind Greek (probably *libawʾ)

In Tetserret : tǝmaṛi
In Tadaksahak : tamaṛi
In Ghadames: tumarši

Unfortunately not attested in Tamajeq which has ažwal/ašwal/ahwal.

But if it was attested it would be tamurẓi because of the -š in Ghadames ?

the prefix m- is the dedicated passive prefix in Ghadames and widespread in Libya otherwise iirc

BN could be a loan from Punic, but an Amazigh etymology is possible too (think of Ghadames toBənt, more commonly developed to tawunt). Punic funerary inscriptions often say things like "he erected this stone" (incl. in bilingual inscriptions) so it fits in the regional context to mention the stone

There should be a way to talk about the Ghadames change of ɣ > ʕ, for which no conditions are clear and which can have different outcomes from the same root. Could be dialect mixing, could be sth else; but I want to be able to refer to it by something more dynamic than “irregular correspondence”
