2 more Norfolk ponds!!! As part of our new Coast Ghosts Pilot project we have resurrected 2 near-sea #ghostponds. 5 days of digging & now we just need rain!!! The ponds will bring more clean freshwater to the coastal strip. Huge benefits for migrant birds. #coastghosts @ournorfolkcoast.bsky.social

Happy NY!!! Since 2014 we have pioneered the restoration of overgrown ponds & lost infilled #ghostponds in the UK. Our methods, learnt from a wonderful farmer (Richard Waddingham), are mega successful & lead to massive biodiversity gains for aquatic & terrestrial species. Please support us in 2026 🎉

The most successful form of #pond conservation is the re-excavation of deliberately infilled #ghostponds. Here = 2 years of colonisation in a Norfolk ice age #ghost filled in for farming. An incredible pond results at fierce speed! @timholtwilson.bsky.social @hayleymcmechan.bsky.social

For your freshwater Friday delight... we're thrilled to present a deep dive with @carlsayer.bsky.social, Prof of Limnology & Freshwater Ecology at UCL, into the fascinating world of #GhostPonds, and their potent power for ecological and palaeoecological regeneration:

1/2: Ponds were often filled in at the same time that hedges were removed & so burnt wood & hedgebank soil was dumped in the disappearing pond which was a convenient hole. Big tree stumps could not be burnt so often come out whole when we restore #ghostponds. Often we find loads of big stumps

I'm so excited to see what tapping deep into the seedbank achieved. Also I need to know more about #Ghostponds . This is fantastic!

The magic of a resurrected #ghostpond just 3 years on. Nearly 30 wetland plants & Great Crested Newt where there was ploughsoil. This lost #pond was filled in >100 years ago but still had a viable seedbank 1.5 m below the field surface. The most successful form of ecological restoration known?

Mapping missing lost ponds - with historical maps & AI www.linkedin.com/posts/ickram...

These are all lost ponds - mapped, remembered, and ready to return.   Once, nearly every field had a pond. They weren’t just decorative - they were vital for holding water, supporting biodiversity, and structuring the landscape. Frogs, newts, dragonflies, and wild plants thrived in them. Farmers relied on them.   Over time, many were filled in for modern agriculture - quietly erased. But their footprints remain.   At ArchAI, using historic maps from 1900 and our AI-driven process, we’ve traced these ponds across the country. Our Lost Habitats dataset shows exactly where they once existed, and helps identify which ones can be brought back.   Restoring ponds doesn’t have to be speculative. The data shows where they worked before, and where they could work again. It’s one of the clearest, most targeted opportunities for ecological recovery at scale.   Let’s stop guessing. Let’s bring them back, field by field.   #LostHabitats #NatureRestoration #PondRestoration #GhostPonds #FreshwaterHabitats #AI #GIS #Ecology | 273 comments on LinkedIn

Watch this space.

But also pack an emergency grab bag if you live near one.
If your home/livelihood are ever more frequently wrecked or threatened by severe flooding, and you've been wondering why, this graphic (plus climate breakdown) tells you all you need to know.
