Writing retreat at @gladstoneslibrary over, but here's a little selection of its intriguing, beautiful & sometimes bizarre books that I (mostly) didn't allow to distract me 📚
Photo grid of lots of 19th century books on shelves with colourful old fashioned covers and a range of tantalising titles : The Cat, Womankind IN Western Europe, A Winter Jaunt To Norway, English Wayfaring Life, Popular Errors Concerning Politics and Religion, Démon Possession and Allied Themes, The Best Books, The Mammoth and the Flood, A Glossary of Obscure Words in Shakespeare and his Contemporaries, How The Other Half Lives (shelved next to The Truth About Opium Smoking), Cyprus: Its Cities Tombs and Temples, Tiryns - next to Ilios: City and County of the Trojans, The Henwife, The Funeral Tent of an Egyptian Queen, Letters From Hell, Caliban: The Missing Link.

I wish #gladstoneslibrary were here. There's lots of #writers and book lovers who are probably familiar with the place. I've never been but have a visit planned next month. www.gladstoneslibrary.org

Our fabulous volunteer Anna and brilliant Librarian Isobel have drawn up reading lists for our online bookshop: uk.bookshop.org/shop/gladstoneslibrary

They include books you can no longer buy at the Library itself because they sold out!

What would you add to the list if you had a bookshop?

A colourful mug with the writing 'Gladstone's Library is my happy place' is placed on a shelf with a wooden backdrop. Around it is a coaster with a stack of books drawn, a pin badge of a stack of books, a door hanger that says 'shh... I'm reading', a length of green fir branch, and a piece of wrapping paper with a colourful bookcase design. A three-tiered afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes and scones placed on a wooden table. A damaged book laid on a black surface. The book is torn in two with the spine ripped off. A woman sits in a garden, at a table, reading a book and pouring milk into a teacup.

Today I visited Gladstone's Library for the first time. The quietest library I've ever visited. Going back tomorrow. Can't wait. #GladstonesLibrary

We returned to Gladstone's Library yesterday to pick up our new cards. Sat and read for a while and then had tea and a scone. #GladstonesLibrary

“It snowed last year too: I made a snowman and my brother knocked it down and I knocked my brother down and then we had tea.”
― Dylan Thomas

The pavements of Hawarden have thawed, but there's still a bit of snow on the fields. Pop over if you want tea after building a snowman!
