This, from today’s WSJ, would make a good economics exam question:

“This idea that you can break trade, and not break the capital flow side, is a fantasy,” said Steven Blitz, chief U.S. economist at GlobalData TS Lombard.”

If you’re interested in applied macroeconomics, two A+ podcasts to stay on top of are JP Morgan’s Global Data Pod and GlobalData TS Lombard: Perkins vs Breamish (featuring Bluesky’s own @darioperkins.bsky.social). Both have quite adversarial pairings of colleagues batting around forecasts/data.

Report Questions AI Climate Gains Amid Resource Use
GlobalData says the energy and water demands of AI systems could outweigh some of their environmental benefits. Rising data center emissions and water consumption could undermine the climate benefits attributed to artificial intelligence, according to a GlobalData report. The report distinguishes between predictive AI, which can help manage renewable power grids, agricultural resources and building energy use, and generative AI. GlobalData says evidence for the climate benefits of generative systems remains limited while their environmental demands are substantial. The company also cautions against relying on generative AI to produce sustainability reports. Incorrect information about emissions or company policies could lead to inaccurate disclosures. GlobalData recommends evaluating each proposed use of AI against its measurable environmental benefit and the resources needed to develop and operate it. The report does not provide an overall figure showing whether AI’s climate benefits exceed its environmental costs...

I wish I was making this up, but it's reasonable to think every 2.5%pts universal tariff will add...

Wait for it....

0.3%pts to the CPI.

It's a sellside "rule" for a reason.

This is a terrible thing, and it really doesn't help that so much of the response seems to be just dumping hope on solar power to fill the gap.

Solar and wind are truly complementary, and a 'just solar' alternative is more difficult, messier, and costlier
