The Underjord Newsletter
Not every thought needs to be a blog post. Some ideas are more fun in a more personal setting. I write quite a bit and some of it goes to the blog here. But I also write every week for my newsletter.…

Our speaker's dinner involved a bus heading out into the swedish countryside on a dark evening.
Lovely restaurant in the middle of nowhere open just for us.

Their food is lovely, the space is great. It is truly fun to host in this town.

When the bar staff joins the karaoke.
Bank 28 was an afterthought after the first Goatmire. They offered a discount and I thought the place seemed good. This year I knew they were good and we made plans.
I loved what it became and I don't think they have any regrets.

Villa Celine is a relatively recently opened restaurant and bar in Varberg. Them taking on 190 crazed developers was a bit of logistical sports but they did it well. And the mood in the place was fantastic.
And Sam Aaron brought the music.

Small special touches speaker louder than grand gestures.
For two years of Goatmire we've had a gift snuck into the rooms of every speaker. Each time put together by Josefin at Bergströms Téhandel. I love a good co-conspirator and she is top tier. Very cute store.

I loved it last year how that bar became an informal hanging out place, and this year with lightnings and karaoke it was even better. Loved that the staff participated in karaoke too. I really like the vibe of that place, and at this point I can't imagine Goatmire without Bank 28 🫶️

As our Goat types the scene plays out. Regardless of what they type. If you know hackertyper you know the trick.
The laptop shows what the actor should be doing. The projection shows what the audience thinks the actor is doing.
Maybe I do my next conference talk this way.

If you look at the display used in our vignettes. That was one of my efforts. The foliage (and little glowy wisps) are a web overlay on the MacOS display passing through all inputs but letting us do set dressing of the output itself.

Few screws and late batteries aside. It is shocking how few things failed at Goatmire.
Two speakers had demos that disappointed them. Both talks landed well regardless.
We had tech that should have been in the theatrics that didn't fire properly and was just cut.
But most things worked.

I loved the first one, I couldn't make it this year, and I want more :). I do understand, though ,how much work goes into organizing a conference, let alone a blockbuster like Goatmire with music, theatrical performances, flying drones, robots and a daily fika.
