Such a lovely welcome as I entered my little plot, I forgot all about soil & digging & just sat down!
I mean how can you when Robin & Great tit are having a Sing-off, excited Magpies are adding sticks to nest, Buff-tailed queens are foraging in the Goat Willow or preparing to sleep right by my feet?

The first pair of Swallows over the garden just now.
I went back to the house to get the camera, as they were holding nicely in the very strong easterly.
When I came back out they were gone, so instead, here's the first pair of Goat Willow buds breaking into leaf...

Goat willow. We always called it pussy willow when I was a child, because the grey catkins resemble a kitten's paws. I hope this little tree will be in bloom by the time the solitary bees emerge, because its flowers are a fantastic source of nectar and pollen.

#GoatWillow (Salix caprea) getting into 'pussy willow' stage on my allotment. Soon these male catkins will be covered in yellow pollen & attract emerging bumblebee queens, that together w/ other pollinators will fertilise the female catkins arriving later. An important tree to wildlife! Grow one!

#GoatWillow (Salix caprea) getting into 'pussy willow' stage on my allotment. Soon these male catkins will be covered in yellow pollen & attract emerging bumblebee queens, that together w/ other pollinators will fertilise the female catkins arriving later. An important tree to wildlife! Grow one!
