My favourite 🇿🇦 gqom track in some time is “Vala” by threesome Dankie Boi, Goldmax (him again!) and Blacks Jnr ft. Dladla Mshunqisi & Black Catz. All those rhythmic shifts and that bubbly riff give this a delightful unusually light touch:

Dlala Thukzin also made an all-killer album in Finally Famous Too, "VAR" is definitely a Crazy Cousinz nod yes? The amapiano/UK funky links are so strong open.spotify.com/track/72V7ip...

On one listen, that Goldmax, Blacks Jnr album Play At Your Own Risk that you wrote about sounds strong.

obv there might be a throughline from the older gqom tradition to this specific hard-hittingness - but gqom, as I see/hear it, comes with a particular density of sound - while in piano there tends to be open space (incl in “Bujwa Stena”). “Drip Juluka” is clearly gqom (as is anything with Goldmax).

an emphatic yes to Dlala, obviously (and to “VAR”, Goldmax strikes again). can’t wait to check out the Kampire compilation, wasn’t aware of it.

Dense gqom from the Goldmax & Blacks Jnr collab album Play At Your Own Risk.
Picked the track with singer Tman Xpress to sample it, because he’s good, and it didn’t disappoint.
(Lots of stepping going on, couldn’t ascertain the right number).
