The Remaining Mountain, from the famous Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, a masterpiece painting by Huang Gongwang (Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou) … not a single mushroom here 🧐

Finished wide view from Series 2 of "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains." Studying how Huang Gongwang used cool peaks against warm sunset skies for depth — a 14th-century trick that still holds up today.

What patience he had,
like a cat who comes back season after season to a mole’s tunnel.

Honors may go to others.
Riches may go to others.
Huang Gongwang has one great job to do.

And he sings like a tree frog,
and he dances on old bare feet.

In this context the aim isn’t to reproduce the original work precisely, but to capture the essence of the master’s style for incorporation into one’s own work, as shown here in Wang Hui’s 1673 copy of Huang Gongwang’s 1350 original: (9/20)
