Samsung has announced it will discontinue its proprietary Samsung Messages app in July 2026, urging Galaxy device users to switch to Google Messages as the default messaging application for a more consistent Android experience. After the shutdown, users will no longer be able to send messages through Samsung Messages except for emergency service numbers or pre-defined emergency contacts. The app will also become unavailable for download from the Galaxy Store, and newer devices such as the Galaxy S26 series already do not support its installation. Users running Android 11 or older versions remain unaffected and can continue using the Samsung Messages app. Samsung warns that switching on some pre-2022 devices may temporarily interrupt ongoing RCS conversations, though chats should resume normally once both parties use Google Messages. The company promotes the transition by highlighting benefits including enhanced security features, full RCS support, integration of AI capabilities like Gemini, and improved multi-device connectivity. This move reflects Samsung's shift away from maintaining its own messaging solution toward Google's ecosystem, which has become the standard for many Android users. Community reactions on platforms like Slashdot vary, with some users expressing indifference or relief at removing bloatware, while others voice concerns about increased reliance on Google for messaging metadata and potential loss of customization options. Overall, the change aims to streamline the user experience across the Android platform while phasing out a long-standing but less feature-rich proprietary app.
