The least-talked-about factor in the decline of local news and reading is how horrible and unusable so many of their websites are. It's just the truth, and it's been awful for a decade, so people moved on.
I did the right thing the other day and bought a one-month sub to a regional paper b/c it had an article I wanted to read. The paper's site never worked on three different browsers, I went back and forth with support many times, they finally said they couldn't help anymore, great job everyone.

I never found a replacement I use as much as I used #GoogleReader but #Feedly has been an ok #RSSReader for me.

A scroll through journal RSS feeds has been part of my morning routine since I was a PhD student (💓 for the days of #GoogleReader). Honestly, the hit rate is much lower than keyword tracking, but I enjoy finding unexpected papers that expand my interests and understanding #ChemSky

Now we're forced to do it on some awful places and barely get what we want... And this feels all planned.
