…there were lots of quite young men then who seemed to topple readily into being old men. They lingered on the edge of it, as if it were a tempting choice. #twelvepostwarstories #grahamswift

We are all fuel. We are born, and we burn, some of us more quickly than others. There are different kinds of combustion. But not to burn, never to catch fire at all, that would be the sad life, wouldn’t it?

On this day in 1949 Graham Swift was born.

He is a successful author and many of his books have been adapted into film.

He was the joint winner of the 1996 Booker Prize with 'Last Orders', but was accused of copying another writer!

Graham Swift – Mothering Sunday (2016). In 1924, a young maid, Jane Fairchild, meets her well-to-do lover, Paul Sheringham, who is about to marry someone of his own class. But events don’t go to plan. A compassionate and beautifully written novel. Up there with Swift’s best work. #GrahamSwift

You can't get more literary talent than that. What great linguistic power, subtle interpretation and intellectual breadth. Magnificent.

My current read - brilliantly captures the geography and strangeness of the Fens and intertwines it all with themes of the circular nature of history (& that we never learn from it - how apt!) and story-telling and unreliable narratives.
