A Chilean man accused of defrauding Islanders in a so-called "grandparent scam" is facing nearly a dozen more charges in New Brunswick.

Glen Crossley, a 56-year-old Montreal resident previously convicted in two separate deaths, is now facing U.S. charges in connection with a multimillion-dollar grandparent scam. Crossley first gained notoriety in 1989 after striking Canadian Olympic swimmer Victor Davis with his car outside a bar in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., which resulted in Davis’s death. Convicted for leaving the scene of the accident, Crossley served 10 months in jail. In 2016, he was involved in a bar altercation that caused the death of 70-year-old Albert Arsenault, leading to a manslaughter conviction and a 15-month prison sentence. U.S. prosecutors have now unsealed an indictment against Crossley and six others, alleging their involvement in a grandparent scam network that defrauded elderly Americans out of tens of millions of dollars. The scheme, reportedly run by Gareth West, involved scammers acting as “openers” and “closers” to manipulate victims into sending money. Crossley, codenamed “Buju,” allegedly served as a “closer,” convincing victims that their loved ones were in legal trouble. Authorities are seeking extradition of Crossley and his co-accused to Vermont. The scam targeted thousands of Americans over three years, leaving victims financially and emotionally devastated.
