Our last cookout featured these from my mom. One day I’ll be able to keep mine as perfectly wrapped from beginning to end.
A paper plate with three stuffed grapeleaves (warak arish) and a ripped piece of arabic pita bread. Syrian/Lebanese stuffed grapeleaves often have a meat and rice filling instead of the vegetarian dolmas you’re probably thinking of. These are made with ground beef but are cooked with lamb in a lemon broth.

So for me, learning about Little Syria is trying to learn about the parts of my heritage that were assimilated away. I can still roll some mean grapeleaves but I wish I had gotten more of what the culture was especially from my great-grandmother before she passed.

I’m sure you’re familiar with Warak enab (rolled grapeleaves) these are the same stuffing but in zucchini and squash!

We call the stuffing Hashweh, and stuff everything with it.
