They can't break Apple's encryption. That's just fear mongering. What they CAN do is leverage zero-day exploits like the NSO Group does. ICE already uses Pegasus & Cellebrite+GrayKey among others. If they could break encryption, they'd be valued in trillions of $ & would be the only ones who could.

I think there's a typo in the story, the 2nd to last paragraph reads like the forensic investigator Wilhelm broke into their own phone.
The investigation into the murder is actually 404 Media-relevant for several reasons. The AI-generated songs were found after Wilhelm used both Cellebrite and Graykey to try to break into Wilhelm’s phone.

Good advice. IMPORTANT: tools like Graykey and Cellebrite can crack locked iPhones sometimes, even with biometrics disabled.

Use a long alphanumeric passphrase instead of a PIN

Your iPhone is MUCH easier to crack if it's merely screen-locked vs. powered off.

If you have time, POWER OFF your phone

Frankly I think Apple does a pretty poor job explaining the benefits of Lockdown Mode. The website explaining it is focused on "mercenary spyware." But this court record shows it may be able to protect against very common forensic, physical access tools as well www.404media.co/fbi-couldnt-...
A small section of the Lockdown Mode page also mentions mitigations around connecting an iPhone to an external accessory. “Device connections: To connect your iPhone or iPad to an accessory or another computer, the device needs to be unlocked,” the Lockdown Mode page says. “To connect your Mac laptop with Apple silicon to an accessory, your Mac needs to be unlocked and you need to provide explicit approval.” Mobile forensics tools such as Graykey and Cellebrite, which law enforcement use to break into phones, work by physically connecting to a phone to then unlock them.
