Interannual variability in global mean temperature is most strongly related to temperatures in the tropics, here shown by correlating detrended global and gridpoint temperatures. There is very little relationship with temperatures over Europe and many parts of Asia.

As soon as the latest hot spell starts to think about winding itself down, the EC ensembles are picking out 40c in extremis towards the end of the run... (London gridpoint shown). Would love to see a study (probably done already!) that talks to operational ensemble frequency of T>40c.

Locally a lot of rain has already accumulated close to the Alps (here radar precip sum), measured 122 mm in Kruen. And a lot of rain is about come with enhanced local #flashflood risk! Map shows 06 z run of ID2. Last map shows the spread for each gridpoint ID2 EPS #severeweather

This is a London gridpoint and the ECMWF ensembles. Met Office talked to wet bulb temperature - this is dew point. Interestingly the Met Office has the highest dew point temperature of 6 of the models here (Met Office in bottom-left). Although maybe they have better inputs on soil moisture etc.?

Taylor approximating is fitting polynomials to arbitrary functions, you can think of the random points on each gridpoint as the function.

Then the insight of Taylor is that you need nth order polynomials to accurately match the n-th derivative. ..
