Alternatively, build the gridscale batteries as tender cars, and build out the catenary lines from small, underutilized sidings.
Park the battery tenders on the sidings connected to the catenary, and buy/sell with the grid. Expand incrementally as demand grows. Move units as needed.

I could Imagine that Na would be used for large fixed infrastructure, like gridscale batteries. A lot of the properties like not catching fire, not needing cooling, etc.. make them more attractive in case of a disaster.

The economics of batteries are you just license people to run commercial grid scale batteries, and when the price goes negative, they buy, and when its $3000/kw they sell. Lot of people are building private gridscale batteries

If we finally get sodium batteries off the ground - and I think we're gonna, soon - gridscale renewables are going to be doable for pennies. Sure sodium batteries require more space, but, look. space is something we definitely have. of all the resources the US is lacking, space is not one.

Lithium has doubled in the last year, based on gridscale battery + EV demand (after falling by almost a factor of six).
The US is a lost cause for 2.5y, The rest of the world should take advantage and max out installation.

Yeah - a lot of the big ones built in the last few years used rare earth. They're great for energy density, whoch is important for batteries that have to be mobile (e.g. transport), but the gridscale ones are a different story - lots of advances being made on that front.
