While the #GladeCreekGristMill is relatively new (1976), its materials were salvaged from several other #gristmills. It represents #WestVirginia 's history with the mills.

Today's #blueskyartshow theme is #abandoned.

My role in this resistance is PROCUREMENT.

No one can afford anything, & I can find you ANYTHING YOU NEED at a discount.

I have sources on everything from groceries to gristmills, from meat to metal detectors.

However, in order to work safely, I need a work van.

Another stage of my textile journey, digging deep into tide mills. Most were sawmills or gristmills, but here and there the tides powered some fulling (and maybe carding?) of wool, as in East Boothbay, Maine. www.tidemillinstitute.org/tmi-database/

“A windmill is a machine operated by the force of wind acting on vanes or sails to mill grain (gristmills), pump water, generate electricity, or drive other machinery.” – Wikipedia

A gristmill grinds grain into flour. The name refers to the grinding equipment as well as the building. Gristmills, powered by water wheels, have been around for many centuries, some as early as 19 BC. In the United States, they were common by the 1840s. #gristmill #westvirginia #landscapes

This image was taken at Yates Mill in North Carolina. Yates Mill is a water powered mill and of the 70 in Wake County this is the only remaining mill that is in operating condition. Gristmills provided the important service of grinding corn and wheat into meal and flour.

They just want to keep cycling generations of workers through the gristmills so they make a profit. We have decades of information and dead patients who can demonstrate the issues w asbestos.

Absolutely. He's invented a number of machines: gristmills, pumps, Boscari's first dry dock. Whether he would feel at home with our tech if it were available? I can see him having blind spots where he would just refuse to learn how to use something.

Idiots following idiots. Wouldn't be so bad except they elected an idiotic greedy powermongering felon with serious mental disorders and immoral sycophants into the highest offices in our country. All paid for by a handful of billionaires who see Americans as fodder for their gristmills of greed.
Yeah, this dum dum is talking about chicken pox.

Anyway, it's very cool and awesome that he has so much cultural and political influence.

Or it would require believing that each of these CEOs has so much money that they are first insulated from their mistakes and secondarily, that their very focused acuity is actually on using the gristmills of capitalism to accrue power, not in machine intelligence.
wow is it possible for seven people to all be wrong about something?

Daniel Penfield built his first mill nearby in 1800, and over time this section of Irondequoit Creek powered sawmills, gristmills, triphammers, tanneries, and other local businesses.

Most of that is gone now, but the old ruins and foundations still give the park a little hidden history.

In 1805, settlers arrived, and the Village of Franklin Mills was born.

Early settlers, including the Haymaker family, built gristmills along the river. In the 1830s, the Pennsylvania & Ohio Canal arrived, sparking rapid growth for the small village.

Colebrookdale Railroad  in Boyertown, Pennsylvania
Travel back in time along Berks County’s scenic Secret Valley aboard the Colebrookdale Railroad. Leaving from the historic Boyertown and Pottstown stations, you’ll journey through the same tract of land that the original iron pioneers would have traveled, taking in historic locales of Pennsylvania's first iron works. Sites including former gristmills, blast furnaces, and the personal residence and an iron refinery of industry pioneer John Potts, after whom Pottstown is named. The region was a major force in the growth of the iron and railroad industries, eventually earning the nickname Boomtown USA. In fact, steel sourced from Pottstown was used in major projects from the Panama Canal to the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll also pass by Pine Forge, the site of the first ironworks in Pennsylvania, and sites owned by other iron barons, like Samuel McCall. Today, visitors can experience early 20th century ambiance aboard the railroad’s several active, restored rail cars. Swoon to the songs of a 1898 player piano as you sample tapas and wine aboard the glamorous “Storm King,” a first-class parlor car. Ferns, fabulous chandeliers, and intricately detailed wood accent the “Maine Central” lounge car. Brunch and dinner trains, plus a fall foliage tour and other popular holiday-themed excursions are all offered. More than just fascinating history, the scenic corridor is teeming with wildlife, and it’s common for riders to spot eagles, hawks, foxes, turkeys, and deer from the railcars.

In 1793, Minard Yeoumans bought 210 acres that form today’s village core. The Rivière aux Brochets powered sawmills and gristmills, fueling early growth and shaping Frelighsburg’s economic future.

Little did they know they’d just made a major leap that flew right past the use of water wheels for gristmills, ore refining, and clothmaking. They went straight to hydroelectric power by hooking up the water wheel to their electric generator. Free power supplied by Mother Nature! #DrStone 1.20.21

A TRANSFORMATION FROM RUDIMENTARY TO EXEMPLARY –The Humble Beginnings of Hydroelectric Power In Collinsville, Connecticut
By Janet M. Conner PART I Collins Company, One Hundred Years, 1826-1926: A Brief Account of the Development of the Collins Company in the Manufacture of Axes, Machetes and Edge Tools. Literary Licensing, LLC (2013). Antiquated water-powered gristmills, sawmills, and fulling mills were the forerunners to early manufactories using hydromechanical power, and later, hydroelectric power. The principles for generating power are similar.
