You really open a can of worms when you casually say "upstate NY". Very much of it is not "pretty white", especially the Borscht Belt where Grossingers was located.

Growing up in the legendary Borscht Belt of the Catskills in "Upstate" NY, it was a rite of passage to work at one of the famous resorts, at one time or another.

This place was just off the highway in Liberty, NY back in the day.
Really was quite the pitstop for folks for some time, but this was also back in the day of Concord, Kutchers Grossingers, Nevele and was huge vacation spot.

I stayed at Grossingers. Happy memories. I still recall seeing Hines, Hines, and Dad there. They were fabulous. The applause was deafening. People were given sticks to bang on the table. Kind of weird, but people let them know that they enjoyed the show.

I've always felt people from the East Coast don't comprehend western distances. I once overheard a man in the Grossingers steam room complaining that he'd been in LA for a conference and was totally pissed off that he couldn't drive to San Francisco when he had a free afternoon. He was still angry.
