Hobbs refused to renew state water leases for a Saudi-owned company pumping billions of gallons. Mayes sued a large user & won funding for neighbors' dry wells. GOP leaders blocked rural groundwater law for yrs: Hobbs & Mayes used every tool they had to protect AZ water for Arizona families.

Biggs says to rely more on groundwater & questions conservation laws while aquifers drop 400+ feet. Pumping more from a shrinking supply doesn't create water — it dries wells and splits land. Arizona needs protection and enforcement, not a gamble on what's already running out.

Groundwater quality dynamics and hydrochemical indicators of water insecurity in the semi ...
To determine groundwater quality at a basin level in climate-stressed, data-scarce basins, approaches need to be developed that go beyond traditional descriptive hydrochemistry and interpret the data to provide spatial indicators of water insecurity. Groundwater samples were collected from 54 boreholes and hand-dug wells from the Sokoto Basin across the contrasting basement and sedimentary aquifer systems with the aim of providing an integrated assessment of the quality dynamics of the groundwater. The methodological novelty is the simultaneous testing of controlling processes in a hydrochemical and heavy metal characterisation, quantification of spatial dependence through multivariate statistical analysis, variogram modelling, and ordinary kriging, resulting in the identification of contamination hotspots. The findings show significant variation between the different lithologies and different areas, with values being higher in the basement complex aquifers than the sedimentary aquifers, with respect to the concentrations of minerals such as Mn, Cr, Al, Zn and As. The combined investigation suggests that the composition of groundwater is mainly regulated by mineral weathering, rock-water interaction, evaporation-induced concentrations and locally derived human inputs. The geostatistical modelling also identified specific regions of hydrochemical hotspots, which were mainly located in low-lying locations and areas with high evaporative stress, suggesting that climate stress can...

#Wisconsin DNR okayed to set groundwater standards for 22 pesticides. Some 2/3 of residents source drinking water from groundwater, 1/3 rely on private wells. A 2023 survey estimated that 43 percent of wells in Wisconsin contained at least one pesticide. 🧪🌱

'…groundwater also puts stress on u'ground geological formations. The Konya basin contains extensive carbonate rocks, incl limestone. Over long periods, groundwater circulating through fractures dissolves minerals & enlarges openings… Sinkholes form when material above such voids becomes unstable.'

'The difficulty is that demand for water has grown beyond the rate at which the aquifers, a body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater, can recover. A recent regional study estimated an average annual loss of groundwater storage, equivalent to 3.4cm of water.'

That purple comes from Fe4+ iron centers created by natural gamma radiation over time — essentially the rock irradiated itself! The hollow formed when gas escaped lava, then silica-rich groundwater slowly deposited those crystals layer by layer.

As the song says, “There’s many a river that waters the land” but in Texas, it’s the ground that often waters the rivers. Groundwater provides 55% of water used in Texas; like much of the world, that groundwater is declining, threatening supplies & unique ecosystems.
