Well I’m a tad emotional about this 💛💙

30 years ago, not long after my middle baby died from #GroupBStrep infection, I was told a vaccine was 10–15 years away.

It’s taken rather longer. Now a GBS vaccine is in Phase 3 trials.

Not there yet. But goodness, we’re so much closer.

In many countries, #groupBstrep guidelines recommend getting tested for GBS during your 36th or 37th week of pregnancy. If the test result is positive, you should receive IV antibiotics during labor. Knowing your GBS status is important! gbs-intl.org/gbs-testing #GBSTest

Research is key. Major progress has been made toward having a maternal #GroupBStrep vaccine widely available to help protect babies from GBS. Until then, testing and appropriate treatment are our best tools! gbs-intl.org/gbs-testing

Crikey - 30 years ago Group B Strep Support became a charity. So much has changed - though some things sadly haven't.

But people are alive today because of GBSS's work. We're hugely proud of that.

Thank you to everyone who's been part of it: more at gbss.org.uk/latest-news/...

This is a common question we hear from parents whose baby was infected by #groupBstrep even though the mother's GBS status was negative. While it varies by case and the exact way is usually difficult to determine, there are a few possible explanations:

Testing Negative
All women need to know how to help protect their babies from group B strep even if they have tested negative. A woman's GBS status can change, so even if she has tested negative, she could later be colonized.

You'd expect a healthcare provider to inform you before a procedure, but that's not always the case with FMS, a common practice to attempt to induce labor & that may push bacteria closer to your baby. Be aware that #GroupBstrep can cross intact membranes. gbsi.me/MembraneStrippingInfo
