The folk with torches are guisers, people in disguise. There are many squads of guisers. The Jarl's squad are always dressed as Vikings. Each year their costumes are based on a particular person or story from Norse history and the imagery is a secret until the night #uphellyaa

Accusations that Halloween is a made up American holiday have been going round since I was a kid, so about thirty five years. Maybe it's a Cornish thing, but we had guisers, pumpkins, Halloween sweets, the whole thing.
