#Egypt, #Sudan, #Djibouti, #Eritrea and #Somalia join Saudi-led #Red_Sea, #Gulf_of_Aden maritime alliance of eight countries

.
#Saudi_Arabia is assembling a new multinational maritime defence coalition bringing together eight Red Sea and Gulf of Aden states, including Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia, as regional tensions and disruptions to commercial shipping intensify. The proposed alliance comprises Saudi Arabia, #Jordan, #Yemen and the five African states, with the Saudi Defence Ministry saying it aims to strengthen coordination among countries bordering the Red Sea and protect international maritime corridors, commercial and energy routes, and collective maritime interests. The coalition would cover the strategically vital Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden, a maritime corridor through which an estimated 12% of global trade passes, including major flows of oil, liquefied natural gas and container traffic linking Europe, Asia and Africa, according to Business Insider Africa. The initiative adds an African dimension to Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to establish a new maritime-security framework. It comes as attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis and wider regional conflict have disrupted shipping and heightened the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb. The proposed arrangement builds on the Saudi announcement reported above, which followed a July 30 meeting attended by military representatives from 43 countries and an EU delegation. Saudi Arabia is expected to lead the coalition and host its headquarters, with the wider framework potentially involving joint planning, exercises, intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations.
