The Australian government's national gun buyback scheme continues to face challenges as states resist participation due to funding concerns. South Australia has joined other jurisdictions in refusing to contribute state funds, arguing the scheme should be fully funded by the federal government. Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis emphasized that states cannot divert resources from essential services to a program driven by federal politics. NSW remains the sole participant, with its buyback set to begin in November following the Bondi terror attack. Opposition from conservative states like Queensland and Tasmania, along with Western Australia's existing buyback, highlights the political and financial complexities. Critics argue the scheme fails to address extremism while targeting law-abiding shooters, while advocates stress the need for stricter firearms laws. The standoff echoes former Prime Minister John Howard's 1996 buyback, which was fully funded by the Commonwealth. The debate continues as the federal government seeks broader state support for its post-Bondi reforms.

Australia's New South Wales state will start a gun buyback in November, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns have announced a gun buyback scheme set to commence in the state. The initiative, unveiled on August 16, 2026, aims to reduce firearm-related violence by encouraging residents to surrender legally owned firearms for compensation. The program will operate over several months, with details on eligibility and compensation rates yet to be finalized. This move follows growing public concern about gun safety following recent incidents of gun violence. Critics argue the scheme could face logistical challenges, while supporters highlight its potential to enhance community security. The announcement has sparked debate across political parties, with some calling for stricter firearm regulations and others emphasizing the need for balanced policy approaches. The buyback process will involve extensive outreach to ensure public participation and address concerns about legal compliance. This development underscores the ongoing national conversation about gun control in Australia.
