Photo: A white dog in profile is poised to explore a forest of mixed coniferous, birch and aspen trees. Her face, at the center of the photo, is turned partly away from the camera, but her smile is still very much in evidence. Long white fur drapes from her tail. Photo: A couple of unvarnished wooden chairs rest on a wooden plank deck on the south shore of a lake (Gunflint Lake) in the North Woods, well positioned to look across the lake ... into Canada. The deck is shaded. The lake and the forest covered hills on the opposite shore (Canada) are not. Gunflint Lodge, Minnesota September 2020 D5600: ƒ/6.3, 1/160, 22mm, ISO100

Photo: Across a lake that lies between the United States and Canada, an eerie green aurora borealis display over Canada is reflected in the calm waters of Gunflint Lake. It's blood red around its edges. The lake's Canadian shoreline, a black silhouette, bisects the frame, dividing the aerial display from the watery one. The shutter wasn't open long enough to collect a lot of star light, but eight stars are never-the-less visible. Gunflint Lake, Minnesota September 2022 D5600: ƒ/3.5, 1.6s, 18mm, ISO5000
