#OneHitHistory The week ending June 2, 1973, the Mount Vernon, NY rock group Gunhill Road spent the week at #40 on the US #Billboard #Top 40, earning US #OneHitWonder honors… The following week, they dropped off the chart, making them a rare #OneWeekWonder. #GunhillRoad #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Gunhill Road got squeezed from all sides: internal tension, management/business friction, and a public image that didn’t quite match the band they thought they were. By the mid-’70s, Gunhill Road became a talented trio remembered mostly for one odd, catchy, single. #GunhillRoad #OneHitWondered

Buddah/Kama Sutra chief Neil Bogart heard the hit potential hiding inside of Gunhill Road’s "Back When My Hair Was Short.” His fix: make it brighter, faster, bouncier, and definitely clean up the lyrics enough for AM radio. #NeilBogart #GunhillRoad #KamaSutraRecords #OneHitWondered

That original 1972 Kenny Rogers-produced version of "Back When My Hair Was Short" by Gunhill Road leaned heavily into hippie-era satire, with drug references and a more cynical look back at the move from clean-cut ’50s youth to long-haired ’60s adulthood. #GunhillRoad #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

That hit also created a problem inside Gunhill Road... The hit version of “Back When My Hair Was Short” featured bassist Gil Roman on lead vocal, while Glenn Leopold was the group’s main writer and usual lead voice. Soon, Roman was replaced… #GunhillRoad #OneHitWondered

Ever heard of Gunhill Road? Named after a street in the Bronx, this 1970s folk-rock trio is another of those great music ‘what if’ stories... Known for their tight harmonies and acoustic vibe, they’d put out one album as Gun Hill Road… with little national success. #GunhillRoad #OneHitWondered
