Silver & Iron: Part Four
Pages 11/33

Sorrel and Heliotrope leap effortlessly across the rooftops, lit by moonlight and street lamps, Heliotrope following Sorrel's path over chimneys and fixtures. Heliotrope: "This is so fun! It's like having trampolines for feet!" Sorrel: "Aye, but keep your voice down. You've stuck enough rings on me I'm jingling like a reindeer as it is. And mind to land only where I'm landing. You don't wanna fall through someone's ceiling, 'specially when you've not been invited." H: "We have to be invited in? That's real?" S: "Truly. That's why it's a lot safer to cut around as a bat or owl or something. Now that you've got the hang of glamouring, you should learn proper shape-shifting next." H: "Please! Lake said you can turn into a bunch of stuff." S: "He's right, I'm brilliant." H, excited: "Oh! Oh! You should teach me how to turn into mist like you! That must be really handy!" Next panel focuses on the back of Sorrel's head, hair billowing as he jumps. "That's not something you want, pet. Let's worry about bats for now." Heliotrope stares at him a moment then looks away. "Okay." (Perking up) "Um, I've been wondering this for a while,but- what are your pronouns?" She points at him and he turns, startled. S: "My what?" H: "Like, he/they? She/her? Ze/zir, faeself, bun/bunself-" S: "I know what they are… he… he? He/he? I'm just a man, love. Nothing fancy." H: "That's what I thought but I didn't want to assume! You had skirts and dresses in your wardrobe."

Sorrel: "Well fashion's about the only thing worth sticking around for, and men's clothes get fucken old real quick. Still- can't fault you for asking. But for the record, it wasn't my choice to die looking like an emaciated fop." Heliotrope, deep in thought: "Is that a slur?" S: "I used to have to glamour as a woman all the time, actually- that's how I know it's not for me, hah." H, smiling: "You did? Cool! Why?" S, looking forward, expression pensive: "Because either I went out with my husband as some woman, or I went out as myself, with my good pal Roderick. Wears on you." H: "Wait - you were married? Aww!" S: "Well, not legally. Roderick passed away just before the 90s hit. Which is a real shame, 'cause he would've loved Imogen Heap." Heliotrope looks saddened. "Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot how old you really are…" (Panicking) "Um-! I didn't mean that in a bad way-" Sorrel, smiling: "Don't be daft! I am old! And proud of it. Sometimes, I'll even glamour m'self to look more like my real age." As he speaks he passes his hand over his face to reveal an older, wrinklier appearance with pure white hair. H (smirking): "Aren't you still like, fifty years off…?" Sorrel drops the glamour and his smile. "Wow. First of all, (hand on his chest) Gagged me. Second-" He grabs Heliotrope around the shoulders and steers her aside.

Heliotrope and Sorrel overlook a modest two-storey family home built into an incline. Sorrel: "That's the one, yeah?" Heliotrope grins and jumps down. "Yeah! Doesn't look like Mr. Biggle has thrown anything out yet… C'mon!" Sorrel smiles at her. "Keep your voice down, pet." They approach the darkened front door under a small porch. Sorrel starts to take off the bags he's wearing, saying "I'll mist under the door and open it from the inside." Heliotrope: "No need! Three, four, five from the left…" She holds a potted plant that seems to have died in the cold. In the draining dish underneath there is revealed a spare key. "Still there! My dad forgets his keys all the time." She goes to use the key in the front doorknob, but pauses. "Forgot," she corrects herself. The panel does not show her eyes but does show Sorrel glancing at her.

Silver & Iron: Part Two
Pages 35/51

Heliotrope clambers to sit at the foot of the bed while Lake scoots to sit upright at the head. Heliotrope: “That was so cool! Can I do that? How do I do that? Can you teach me!?” Lake, smugly: “That’s a pretty high-level technique. It’s supposed to be a lot easier to start with one bat.” Heliotrope: “Okay! Then let’s do that! Start me off on one bat!” Lake pauses for a beat, a single feather landing on his hair, before he bows his head in an admission of defeat. “I don’t know how. I can only do the swarm.” Heliotrope, grinning: “What! But that’s so silly!” Lake: “Yeah. We could ask Sorrel? He can turn into a bunch of stuff…” Heliotrope runs her hair through her hands in a nervous gesture. “Um, yeah, because- Because it’s not just bats we can turn into, but any creature of the night, right? Like, um, rats, and bugs, and cats…” Lake looks at her again with a smile. “You’re right! Really powerful vampires can even turn into mist. (Aside: I don’t know about cats, though…)” Heliotrope flashes him a confident smirk and shrugs. “Yeah. Basically, I’m already kind of a vampire expert. (Heh) Have you ever heard of A Realm of Dust and Blood?” Lake: “What’s that?” Heliotrope: “It’s my novel I’m self-publishing on Joulenote. It has over a thousand hits already, so I thought maybe you’d read it, but that’s okay.” Lake: “Sounds cool. I’ll check it out.”

Heliotrope starts to ramble. “You should. It’s about my O C, Princess Hemera Bloodstone, except she doesn’t know she’s a princess at the start, but she finds out her mother was the Fairy Queen and her father was the Elder Vampire so she has half-vampire, half-fairy powers- and I did like, a bunch of research into fairies and vampires, so I’m basically the best person you could’ve picked to turn into a vampire because I already know almost all of the lore.” Lake smiles placidly as he listens to Heliotrope as she keeps talking. “And this writers forum I’m in says that sometimes stories resonate with us because they’re actually memories of our past lives from a parallel universe-” Lake, thinking, still smiling: “Yeah I”m gonna have to take a look at this forum ‘cause I’m not sure you should be there unsupervised.” Heliotrope: “And that writing is a way to connect to this parallel universe and the more strongly we believe the more we’ll be able to draw on that power, so I thought… I was wondering…” She trails off and her posture grows more tense. Lake’s face drops to concern as she adds, “Did I do this?” Tears are falling down her face again as she keeps her head down and her arms tucked tightly in. “I wanted it to be real so badly. I tried to use a dream journal and manifestation and all the stuff they said… but I didn’t want it to be like this. Am I the reason my parents are dead?”

Lake, nervous, starts to reach out as if to comfort Heliotrope as she cries. “No! Not at all! You…” He trails off, withdrawing before he actually puts his hand on her shoulder. “Heliotrope…” Heliotrope rubs her eyes furiously, not looking at him. “I’m fine. It’s okay. I’m okay.” Quietly, to herself: “Stop it… stop… don’t be a baby…” Lake scowls inwardly. “If you’re going to blame anyone, blame me. If I’d gotten to you earlier, then… maybe we could’ve… I don’t know.” Heliotrope looks up, her eyes unfocused as she recalls something. “We…” She repeats to herself, remembering Ashley’s face, mostly obscured and washed out by the flash of his phone. Heliotrope drops her hands, squinting. “Was someone else there, back then…?” Lake, concerned: “You remember that? He was the one who helped me save you.” Heliotrope: “So is he another vampire?” Lake: “Actually, he’s a werewolf. But- not he dangerous kind. He’s a doctor. I think.” Heliotrope looks at him in mild confusion. “You think? You two aren’t friends?” Lake looks down and away in thought, somewhat surprised by her question.

Lake says “I’d like to be,” his words carrying over the top of an establishing shot of Ashley, who is doing warm-up stretches, having changed into a plain T-shirt and short gym shorts. He and Maddoc interact with a free-standing touch screen while two werewolf women (human form) in the foreground, wearing athletic wear and drinking water, covertly watch them. Both women are tall, with visible but delicately brushed body hair, but the first woman, a young Black woman with afro textured hair slicked back in a low bun behind a headband, is slightly shorter. She peeks towards Maddoc and Ashley. “Hey- Okay, don’t look right away, but- you see those guys over by the kiosk? Those are two of the Lovell brothers.” The other woman, a tall Scandinavian woman with light braided hair, turns to look over her shoulder. “Who?” Girl 1: “I said don’t look-” Girl 2: “Wait-” The second girl turns back to the first and jabs over her shoulder at a sign on the wall. “The Lovells? Like- the-” [Sign reads “Lovell House”] “Lovells?” Girl 1: “Yeah!” Girl 2: “Oh shit! My parents talk about them, but I’ve never actually met them before…” Girl 1: “The big one is Maddoc, the oldest. I see him around a lot.” Girl 2: “Makes sense, he basically owns the place…” Girl 1: “I think that makes the other one Ashley?” Ashley is pretending that he can’t hear their conversation as he continues to do warm-up stretches. Girl 2: “Wow… (A pause) He’s so small and cute!” Girl 1: “Right?” Ashley’s form drops in exasperation.

Landeg / Silver-and-Iron's Heliotrope and Lake together at a ball or soiree. Heliotrope holds herself up grabbing Lake's head awkwardly as she sits on her shoulders, seemingly slipping off a little while Lake stand stiff and straight, a fist clenched at her side, the other holding up a glass that could be either wine or blood. Heliotrope wears a victorian inspired striped dress and Lake a modern red open back dress, they're both pale vampires, Heliotrope is child with braided curly ginger hair, Lake an adult with straighter messy black hair.

A half body of Mice_show's Sora. She looks ahead with a closed expression, likely sitting in a field of snapdragon flowers. The light is a bright gentle yellow, a few petals flows with the wind. Sora is pale with shoulder length blond hair and pink eyes that matches the flowers around.

Truth-dawn's Enzi, he floats thrice in different outfit. One is Yellow, bright and full of energy singing loudly and proudly into a mic. One is Blue, sitting with his legs closer to himself he smiles softly, his clothes a mix of casual and formal with red stitches. The third one is Red, his pose is relaxed, he seems to talks or sings quietly as he looks somewhere off screen, his outfit less eye catching than the other two minus for his bright colorful rest vest. All have stars on them, part of his short freeform locks changes colors to Yellow, Blue and Red. Sora is black and dark skinned with black eyes and hair.

Silver & Iron: Part Three
Pages 41/49

Ashley unceremoniously drains the rest of his bottle of beer in one chug and Lake’s smile falls to genuine surprise. Once finished, Ashley lets out a contented sigh, still grinning. “Fantastic. Fantastic, fantastic, fan-” He’s interrupted by Lake placing his own nearly-full bottle in front of Ashley, who blinks at it, then picks it up, turning to Lake wordlessly for an explanation. Lake, who is not looking at him, only says “I don’t have germs.” Ashley, nervous, confused, laughing: “Ha, ha… Are you trying to get me drunk?” Lake, incredibly sincere: “Off two beers?” Ashley turns sharply away from him, embarrassed, lifting the bottle to drink. (Quickly) “Just kidding. Thanks.” Lake: “I only bought it so I wouldn’t stand out.” Smaller panels draw a link between the lip of the bottle and Lake’s own lips. Ashley: “Va- (emphatically) You guys can’t drink?” Lake looks off to the side, expression neutral. “No, we drink plenty. Just not stuff like beer.” Ashley turns back with some interest: “Oh, really? Because of the yeast, or…?” He startles himself with apparent realisation, spilling a bit of beer. “Oh!!” He chugs more of the beer, eyes darting away, as he imagines the seemingly obvious answer to his question - a cartoony Dracula-like vampire biting and drinking blood from the neck of a swooning, helpless human. Lake, meanwhile, is thinking of a real photo of water pouring into a wine glass, helpfully labeled “wader” (sic) like old school WordArt. He looks utterly oblivious to Ashlely’s inference.

Ashley fixes Lake with a curious look as he swallows his mouthful, trying to figure him out. (Thinking) “Okay, am I nuts? Is he flirting with me?? He seeks me out, buys me drinks, pulls me aside, says he came to a gay bar to have fun… what am I supposed to think?” He contrasts two different memories of Lake from the night they found Heliotrope. (Thinking) “Gotta be honest, the last time we met, I didn’t think he liked me very much.” Ashley’s imagination exaggerates Lake smirking at him and flipping him the bird as he brags, “What, like it’s hard? Go fuck yourself lmfao.” A small box reads “dramatisation”. Ashley thinks, “But maybe he changed his mind…?” as he recalls how that evening ended - with Lake saying “thank you,” his expression sad and sincere. Ashley: “I thought he wanted to talk about monster business, but I’m the one who brought that up. So what did he want? If I’m right, then I don’t want to lead him on… gotta let him down gently… but if I’m wrong, I don’t want to lose my one link to the vampires…” Ashley focuses his attention on the real Lake now sitting in front of him, his expression and body language forced into nonchalance. Ashley (thinking): “Y’know, I’ve never had the opportunity to look at him properly before. I didn’t need to, he was always just ‘that one vampire who’s huge’... He’s… interesting-looking. Is this what he looked like as a regular human? Wow. His eyes are surprisingly… gentle?” His thought bubbles pan over Lake’s muscular arms and chest. “And damn, that hoodie was hiding a lot. Do vampires work out?” While he’s analysing Lake, Lake is also thinking desperately to himself, “Fuuucckk! I wasn’t expecting him to ask about Heliotrope first! Now I don’t know what else to say!! My mind’s gone blank! This is so awkward! He must think I’m weird A F!” Ashley (unaware) catches his eye on the chain around Lake’s neck and thinks, “Oh!”

Ashley (thinking): “That pendant! It’s the same one he used when turning the girl…” A close-up on the pendant hangs over the composition of the page; what appeared at a distance to be an inverted cross is actually a tiny dagger, with a red gem on the pommel, a pointed guard, and a golden sheath which attaches to the chain. The pendant splits the panel into three parts showing what Ashley saw that night; Lake pulling the golden chain from inside his hoodie, using the tiny blade to make a cut on his right forearm, bleeding red, and finally drops of red blood over Heliotrope’s barely-conscious mouth. Ashley (thinking): “I’m still fuzzy on the details, but evidently, the process required his blood…” Ashley’s focus shifts from his memories to the dagger resting on Lake’s chest. (Thinking) “The top part is actually a sheath for a tiny ceremonial dagger. At least I assume it’s ceremonial. It must have some special significance, to be able to cut a vampire.” He casually takes a sip of his beer and flicks his eyes up to Lake’s. (Thinking) “I’m lucky to have seen the process-” his thought bubble gets caught up in the speed with which Ashley realises Lake has been staring at him the entire time, his eyebrow raised, and Ashley swallows his beer with a choke before whipping around to hide his face behind the bottle. (Thinking) “Shoot! I was staring right at ‘em!! If I didn’t give him the wrong impression before, I did now!! I wasn’t… I mean, I couldn’t… That’s too… um…” Lake glances down at his chest, outlined and heavy-looking with how the too-small tank top has to stretch around him. He smirks. “Heh. Ohhh…”

Silver & Iron: Part Two
Pages 43/51

Ashley deals with the figures handily, racing past with precision strikes blasting holes in the sand - two in the head of the Nymph and one in the chest of the winged figure. As he runs, a smaller figure bursts out of the sand, less identifiable, reaching out for Ashley. Ashley jumps out of its reach, startled. “Ah! Why is this one so sma-” H has his dagger ready but pauses, a vision flashing in his mind of Heliotrope riddled with the infection, her eye sockets hollow, reaching out for him with her mouth open in a scream. He doesn’t use the knife, instead side-stepping the sandy figure as it swipes at him, using a backwards turn similar to a soccer player to evade the attack and keep running.

Maddoc lunges into view alongside Ashley, slashing through all three sand figures with his prop bowie knife. His expression is resolute. Ashley, still running, glances at him with a conflicted expression, but steels himself as they keep running. Maddoc, annoyed: “Fuck you miss one for?” Ashley: “It wasn’t a threat.” Maddoc: “It’s not testing for that- God dammit,” he mutters as Ashley easily outstrips him, clearing the pit of sand before Maddoc can and turning the first corner on the three-leg course. He stares down a long unmarred stretch of floor pitted with small blue shots of paint. He eyes one of the three spherical turrets along the edge of the course, a faint drip of blue leaking from a hole in the centre, then returns to focus straight ahead.

Ashley dashes forward as the three turrets attempt to keep up, tracking him and firing small blue shots which he deftly outruns, stylised against a contrasting yellow. A speed camera clocks him as he passes. He reaches the end unmarked and enters the final leg of the obstacle course where people have gathered by the railing to watch. He hops deftly over raised pedestals to cross a shallow pool of water, then jumps onto the netted climbing wall, grabbing ahold with both hands and quickly making it to the top, where he flips himself up and over the wall using arm and core strength, his prop dagger clenched in his teeth.

Ashley hits the floor running, taking the dagger from his mouth with his left hand and rearing back with his right to land a heavy punch against one of the strength-testing punching balloons/bags hanging at the end of the course. The bag slams back up into its casing with a resounding “da-dom” marking the end of his run. Ashley quickly hops away from the course to get a look at the big screen on the far wall, tugging his shirt up to dab sweat off his face. The screen is displaying “Gauntlet (™)” along with his name and photo (and implicitly Maddoc’s, though this is cut off by the panel) next to four metrics: Power, Speed, Reflex, and Accuracy. Ashley’s scores are still processing, while Maddoc’s are still missing as he has yet to finish his run. Ashley catches his breath and waits for the results while onlookers murmur. They load in order, with his Power score changing first: 893. The crowd says “ooh” before trailing off then dissolving into light chatter. “Pretty average.” “I’m kinda surprised.” “Dude I’m stronger than a Lovell, haha”. Ashley pouts to himself. “Dammit… Maddoc was right, I have gone soft,” he thinks. “Down from 970… (Aside) Can they not act like we don’t all have super hearing here?”
