Mud volcanos happen when sulfur reducing bacteria metabolize sulfuric acid and other corrosives which melts the surrounding rock creating mud. The bubbles aren't steam, they're gasses like CO2 CH4 and H2S; which is hydrogen sulfide, a highly corrosive flammable gas.

For those of you who don’t know, Saudi oil has a lot of sulfur (as H2S) in it. You *have* to remove this before transport (for any number of reasons). About 85% of Saudi oil is processed in one place, a facility called Abqaiq.
No Abqaiq = no Saudi exports

As a recovering astrochemist myself, I’m intrigued by the fact that we don’t see species like H2S which would be needed by processes that produce DMS: if it’s real, the chemistry of this atmosphere is really odd (10/n)
