The Indus Civilization flourished on the northwestern subcontinent, tied to 3 bodies of water: the Indus River, the (now largely dried up) Ghaggar-Hakra River, and Gujarat's coastline.

It declined from 1900 BCE onward and was done by 1700 BCE.

Ghaggar-Hakra River dried up is my favorite theory. It's not clear why they didn't just rebuild on the Indus or Ganges, but maybe the civilization was in decline, and that was the last straw.
