Using a personal example, AHRQ funded my dissertation research (it was NCHSR then) for $15K in 1981. 44 years later, between policy relevant research, 2 terms of public service (@FTC @DOJ), founding a health care data repository (@HCCI) & teaching health economics, I think the investment paid off.

I've said this elsewhere, but reading about modern IC car engine tech (Miller cycle, HCCI, etc.) reminds me very much of late-steam era locomotive tech (turbo-electric, water tube boilers, etc.) - absolutely bonkers, best we'll ever see versions of a technology which we already know is outmoded.

Anytime an #EV downer jokes about solid state battery development taking long, remind them it took 160 years to go from the Otto Cycle's invention (1861) to #ICE engines that max it out (#HCCI, 2021). Solid state batteries' 30 year gestation cycle is positively miraculous in comparison
