No: I'm making the claim that UPF rhetoric goes well beyond that, and also requires a mechanism that goes beyond nutritional information. If people want to go back to the old HFSS framework, I'd have no objection. But UPF specifically *isn't that*.

We did an analysis for the House of Lords Committee on Food, Diet and Obesity to look at the overlap between foods high in salt, fat and sugar (HFSS) and ultra-processed (UPF). We extended the analysis and it is published today (open access):

We did an analysis for the House of Lords Committee on Food, Diet and Obesity to look at the overlap between foods high in salt, fat and sugar (HFSS) and ultra-processed (UPF). We extended the analysis and it is published today (open access):

Thing is it's also very good proxy for HFSS (high fat salt sugar) which is very direct & evidence based and also mass marketed hyperpalatable snacks & "health" food. But it's quite incoherent to try and hold all that under one umbrella when we already have categories for those kinds of food.

Cherry cola and Haribo sweets along the designated queuing area in Morrisons in Leeds city centre.
This clearly violates the #HFSS legislation. But who is enforcing the law? I've noticed more and more HFSS sweets & snacks creeping into queuing areas over the past few months.

Many contradictory studies and the fact *there is no standardised definition of UPF*. You want to say HFSS is harmful? I'd agree! UPF: nope.

Junk food and foods high in fat, salt & sugar (HFSS) are one thing, UPFs another -- and it's important to differentiate. Processing CAN also be used to produce more wholesome products: e.g. packaged wholemeal bread, fortified yoghurts, or more sustainable plant-based alternatives are UPFs.
