Our kind of biscuit tray — but with hexaboards for the future High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), planned for the Hi-Lumi LHC upgrade. The increased granularity of HGCAL will help better distinguish signals from different particles.⚛️

Trial assembly of hexagonal silicon modules on a prototype cooling plate!
HGCAL will have around 27000 such modules on 660 copper plates. Each plate carries bi-phase CO2 in embedded pipes for efficient cooling of the modules to -30° C 🥶

Precise drilling of a prototype copper plate for the CMS HGCAL.
These plates will contain cooling pipes and the holes must be located with 0.1mm accuracy to locate and support around 50 hexagonal silicon detector modules on each side.

Busy bees at CERN! 🐝

Our physicists are carefully assembling minimal detector blocks based on hexagonal silicon modules.
These will be stacked to build a small test version of the new HGCAL calorimeter for the High‑Luminosity LHC era.

Caught in the act!👀😂

Ece is potting cables for the HGCAL cold box at #CERN. This process electrically insulates and mechanically stabilises delicate cable connections, ensuring long-term reliability inside the detector system.

A chilly winter is coming for Tom and Jerry! 🥶

Their namesake cold boxes at Point 5 are getting prepped with their safety system junction boxes. Soon, they'll be chilling the future cassettes of the HGCAL calorimeter to a frosty -35 °C for testing!

This is how the massive steel structure for the new CMS calorimeter, HGCAL, was tested! 👷

Last summer the structure that will house the delicate HGCAL cassettes was assembled in Pakistan and rotated to test its integrity.

The pre-assembly of the first HGCAL endcap absorber structure has now started in Pakistan!
The yellow structure supports the first 13-tonne stainless steel back flange disk, to which 21 more absorber disk layers will be added.

Here we see groups of visitors on a tour of the @cmsexperiment.bsky.social labs.

The groups visited the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) labs, where new pieces of the CMS detector are created to cope with the higher number of collisions at #HiLumiLHC.

Look at tiny hexaboards getting tested!🔬

These are building blocks of the silicon section of CMS high-granularity calorimeter(HGCAL). It will be installed during the upgrade of the detector for Hi-Lumi LHC later this decade, when CMS will have more collision events to capture.
