A full house for “Data as Power: 50 years of the Home Disclosure Act (HMDA)” in Chicago. Bob Kuttner, Ted Wysocki, & Cal Bradford were all involved in organizing for the 1975 HMDA.

Kuttner talks about how his antiredlining work with Sen. Proxmire transformed his life to work on political economy.

Use LLMs to lessen the large fixed costs of managing and organizing large databases. I use the setting of HMDA mortgage data to show how a massive 250m row db can turn into a trivial data exercise thanks to DuckDB + Claude Code.

Looking forward to this in Chicago. Featuring some folks who were there in the early days of organizing for fair lending and community reinvestment, and talking about the 1975 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act.

Many a late night crunching HMDA data for advocacy and research.

There is nobody in the back office today. 🤣🤣🤣 We have...a manager, no processors, one underwriter, hmda, and three servicers. Oh no. Servicing is the most staffed.

Oh. No.

Mapped every investor mortgage in the US in 2024 (HMDA data).

Draw on any market --> get instant stats.

Areas that stand out:
- Exurbs (north of Dallas)
- Vacation areas (Florida 30A)
- Low-income urban (Memphis)

Interested in this data? Send me a note.

Finally figured out that HMDA stuff in DEV. Pushing to PROD for more testing tomorrow morning. Been working on it for a month trying to square peg a round hole, forcing the system to make it work.

In 2020, WBEZ reporters used Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data to discover lenders had invested more in a single white neighborhood than all of Chicago's Black neighborhoods combined... 🧵

Try filling out HMDA disclosures with people from “non traditional” backgrounds.

These forms were designed to delineate white from black from Latino from Chinese. They didn’t think beyond that.

📣 Today in 1975, Chicago housewife and @pplsaction.bsky.social cofounder Gale Cincotta testified to Congress about banks' refusal to lend in low-income neighborhoods. This led to two federal laws, #HMDA and #CRA, to end bank redlining. We must protect these laws and our communities - #getthecrooks!
