#HOMOGRAPHIC
#NowPlaying Peter Hammill - Tears in Time (2026). First listen: as vintage a PH album as possible. Intriguing, expect the unexpected, layered melodies, homographic lyrics. Another one that must grow on you.

Strong and virtuous men deplore the colon. As with its homographic cousin, its overuse signals weakness. Punctuational colons bring "dependent" clauses; biological colons shed our hard-earned waste like Beta men shed their feelings.

More men would know this if the schools still taught Plutarch.
besides the point, but I’m really distracted by the use of a semicolon instead of a colon in the third image

*wheeling out a whiteboard* so homophones are words that sound same and homographs look the same; homophonic homographic contronyms are words that are spelled and sound the same but have opposite meanings

I used "rule" in Beavisian dialect: The context wherein the quality all things, actions, and experiences can be measured only on a binary scale of Suck/Rule. Also, if you choose the other homographic, you rule you, automatically, and sucking sounds like a lot of work. No escape. Might as well rule.

I suppose that’s the other direction: two words with distinct meanings “merging” to become synonymous. As opposed to one word being used for two separate meanings that then loses that homographic quality because the two meanings lose distinction (e.g. culturally).

-ke is the Arabic 2msg possessive, which is homographic with the native Turkish 2sg -iŋ

the grammar i’m working out of presents both as possibilities. i opted for the Arabic seeing as they’re all Arabic words, but i’m very, *very* new at Ottoman, so i absolutely defer to anyone who knows more

I note that Amazon uses the spelling "Amazon Leo", not "Amazon LEO", completing the semantic/orthographic
shift from the abbreviation LEO (Low Earth Orbit) to a proper noun "Leo" meaning low Earth orbit (and
etymologically unrelated to the homographic constellation name).

it's also a bad line because it uses two different meanings of the word "there" and they're both homographic

So skilled in homographic turns to please
Beguiled a populistic need
Apocryphal it won the feast..

And yes, "lead" was an intentionally ambiguously homographic term. 😆

Homographic heteronyms

There's also Homographic homonyms:
- I donned my glasses [spectacles] to examine the glasses of wine.
- fish scale and weighing scale and musical scale and scale as a verb [climb].
