UKMTO reports strike on vessel in Strait of Hormuz The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said on Tuesday that a vessel was hit by an apparent projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday evening, causing a fire. The fire was later put out and the crew were all safe, with the vessel continuing its journey. There was no reported environmental impact, and the extent of damage to the vessel was still being assessed, the UKMTO said. Oil shipments from the Persian Gulf are recovering toward prewar levels as U.S.-protected tankers resume voyages through the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran faces pressure from an American naval blockade, according to analysts and U.S. officials cited by the New York Post.

The attack took place on Sept. 14 and left the Marines with symptoms of concussions including headaches, anonymous officials said.

Eight Marines were wounded when an Iranian missile struck a nonmilitary vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, a newly disclosed incident that exposes gaps in Pentagon casualty reporting and shipboard risk.

In 2023, the International Energy Agency predicted that by 2028 the world’s oil companies would produce more oil than people wanted to buy. Prices responded to that and similar projections of slowing oil demand, dropping too low to attract investment for new wells and refineries. No forecast anticipated that the Strait of Hormuz, the main route for Middle Eastern oil to reach global markets, would be almost completely blocked. So in March 2026, when the strait closed in the wake of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, there was little anyone could do to quickly restore the flow of oil and gas the world’s economy depends on. Some countries did have strategic reserves, but a massive coordinated release from those supplies didn’t make a difference for long – and those reserves may need to be replenished, paradoxically increasing demand for oil in the future.
