This is interesting. Do the French have a policy of retaining routes that are no longer served in case, as here apparently, when circumstances change they can be reopened? If so a lesson we should have learnt post "Beeching" but, given the land fiasco of HS2North (buy then sell it again) we haven't.

I think @stephenkb.bsky.social means 'decreasing' but #HS2North was never about speed, it was entirely about capacity and getting long-distance rail traffic off congested lines.

If Lab was serious about the #GrowthAgenda, they would be reinstating it, even with a lower and cheaper design speed.
The answer to that one is simple: “increasing rail times to London” is a byproduct, not the central aim of boosting other rail links.
