Looking out across a valley in the Towada-Hachimantai National Park in northern Japan, on a very snowy day in December 2017. A building in the foreground is up to its roof in snow. Coniferous trees dot the landscape throughout, each laden with snow. In the very distant background, a range of mountains can be seen. Steam streams from volcanic vents just towards the other side of the plain. From one of my 2017/18 trips up to Towada-Hachimantai National Park here in Japan. Shot eight of the most popular national parks for the Park Authority and tourist association.

Truly amazing spot, especially in this weather.

About 5m of snow. The steam in the background is from volcanic springs.
Snowy landscape in north east Japan. A toilet and bath block in the foreground is almost totally buried by the deep snow. A small river runs through the middle and distant background. Conifers are dotted throughout. Photograph made in black and white. Me in the snow in Towada-Hachimantai national park. In the landscape you see in the other photo here. Behind me there is steam rising from a volcanic vent. I'm dressed in all the winter gear and signature red jacket. Around my neck are two cameras: Nikon D800e with a manual focus, prototype 35mm f/1.2 lens from China. The Hasselblad H6-100c has the 24mm lens on it.

Made #hamradio contact w/Japan just as the 15 meter band (radio waves on that band are as long as a basketball court is wide) was fading out (ionosphere conditions changing).

Managed to bounce those photons over to Hachimantai and get a good copy back all on the power of an energy saving lightbulb.

A landscape orientation photo of a row of vending machines in the snow at dusk. Made this back in 2017, on a trip up to the Towada-Hachimantai National Park here in Japan. Was there as part of a project with the Japan National Parks Authority, to photograph eight of their national parks. We were close to where we would be staying for the night and had just entered an area where the snow was really piled up. So our driver stopped at a little rest area to out the snow chains on the vehicle. 15 minutes there gave me time to grab a drink and grab this photo. The colour of the dusk, the light pouring a sort of visual warmth out on to the snow: really drew me in. It was, in fact, about -20C when I photographed this. Photo made with a 100 megapixel Hasselblad H6D-100C camera and the HC-24mm lens.

A preview version of the February photo in the Japanese edition of my 2025 4K computer desktop wallpaper calendar. Photograph taken in 2017 when I was on an assignment in Towada Hachimantai National Park. We see a row of drinks vending machines in the snow, lit up as dusk has just fallen. The snow in the foreground is lit by the light from the machines and we see lots of vehicle tracks. We'd stopped at this place to put the snow chains on our vehicle. The colour tone of the picture is predominantly blue, cold. All except for the warm glow coming from the light of these vending machines.
