Neues aus der Hadalzone: So nennt man Meeresregionen in mehr als 6000 Metern Tiefe. Wissenschaftler:innen konnten zeigen, dass Organismen in dieser Zone weitaus aktiver sind als gedacht. 🧐 Denn Unterwasser-Erdbeben bringen Nährstoffe selbst in größte Tiefen.

TMAO Lets Fish Survive Crushing Depth

At Challenger Deep (11 km, ~1,100 atm), hadal fish produce trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) to stabilize proteins against pressure. TMAO levels rise linearly with depth — without it, cellular proteins would unfold.
