The remains of the Hallaton helmet, now in the Market Harborough Museum. It is a 1st-century AD Roman cavalry parade helmet, discovered in 2000 near Hallaton, Leicestershire. It wasvmade of iron, originally covered in silver-gilt and gold leaf, and features intricate repoussé details. #FindsFriday

*What if* late Iron Age deposits (Snettisham, Essendon, Hallaton, Melsonby etc) are marking/signs of an end - a huge, dramatic, removal/laying to rest/ending of what went before.

Fascinating talk this evening for the Market Harborough Historical Society by Helen Sharp, curator of archaeology for Leicestershire CC museums, about the recreations of the Hallaton helmet. It needed a huge amount of patience to decide what the pieces that had been dug up might have looked like.

Silversmith and DMU senior lecturer Rajesh Gogna was commissioned to bring the iron helmet, found in fragments in a Leicestershire field in 2001, to life and it has now gone on display.
