I thought this rabbity was maybe injured or dead, but no, he's just laid out enjoying the evening sun as later photos will attest. He wasn't 25 feet from the main trail. Granted I'm usually able to spot citters in the underbrush from a lifetime of bushwacking in the forests of Nova, Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. I'm accustomed to looking through the forest keyholes. The animal pictured is an Eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus), a species common throughout North America and particularly prevalent in Southern Ontario. It features grey-brown "peppered" fur with white underparts and a short, fluffy white tail. This species often has distinctive rusty-red or orange patches on the nape (the back of the neck) and between the shoulders. Its ears are long and rounded with densely furred insides. Cottontails are masters of concealment, often resting in "forms"—shallow depressions they scratch out in the dirt or grass to stay hidden from predators.
