Given the debate prompted by recent bold assertions that King Harold sailed to/from York in 1066, this is a good time to mention that I will again be walking from #York to Battle this Oct., for the 960th anniv. of the Battle of Hastings (as I did for 950th).

The A64 briefly bowing away from the old road betw. #York (behind the camera) & #Tadcaster, in the distance (RR 28c). The names 'Street Houses' &'Streeton' hint at the old street's ancient origins. I'll be walking it again in October.

I'm getting into the detailed planning stage of my #Hastings960 walk, and am pleased to see that the Ordnance Survey has me down for a walk-on role in #TheArchers.

Prof. Licence is plainly trying to undermine my #Hastings960 commemoration walk.* I may have to hire a pedalo.

A section of RR28a, arrowing through the landscape just east of Sturton by Stow, #Lincolnshire. Note the field boundaries - esp. the odd long & narrow one just to the north. The basic field system may have been there before the road.

SMALL BOAT WANTED! This is the historic #RiverTrent ford at Littleborough. I'm walking from York to Battle in Oct, largely by Roman Roads. I need to cross on Sat 3rd, & would much prefer a 'ferry' rather than walking around via G'borough.

I'll be visiting (briefly!) Norman Cross on 6 October, on my York-Battle walk. I've almost finished planning the route, which differs from the one 10 years ago in a few details, though not on that section. I'll post it soon.

The Roman road from #York heading for #Tadcaster (RR 28c) ploughing through the fields south of Copmanthorpe as the A64 bows away west and back. The name 'Street Houses' in the distance hint at the route's ancient origins.

Two successive Roman forts were built on this site in #Doncaster, commanding a crossing of the #RiverDon. At least the later one was known as 'Danum' & part of its NE wall is above ground (yellow line on the aerial).

Scaftworth Roman Fortlet, just east of #Bawtry, #Yorkshire, via Google Earth (2025), then w. the line of the #Lincoln - #Donacster Roman Road (28a) marked. The road crossed the #RiverIdle just to the left.

'Castle Hills', #Huntingdon, as mapped by the OS at the turn of the C20, fading to modern LiDAR. The earthworks remain monumental, despite the passage of almost 1,000 years & a good knocking about from railways and road. I'll pass it on my #Hastings960 walk in October.
