Please don't cut back shrubs and hedgerows until wildlife has taken all the autumn berries! Hawthorn alone, for example, is a fantastic source of food for birds - including blackbirds, thrushes, redwings, fieldfares and, when the weather is really cold, waxwings 🌿

hawthorn berries. English hawthorn is an invasive species here in Canada, but the berries are edible (I didn't pick any)!

Common along the Atlantic, a classic 'leath ceann' (half head in Irish) hawthorn, leaning away from the prevailing wind.

The process involved isn't actually the wind bending the tree, but leaf shoots doing better on its lee (more sheltered) side, encouraging lopsided growth.
