Not only is loneliness reaching epidemic proportions, burnout is too. A recent article from NSI Nursing Solutions 2026 states, “hospitals face a mounting crisis as burnt-out nurses quit in droves.” This burnout crisis is affecting huge swaths of doctors, healthcare professionals, front-line workers, teachers, AI scientists, and many others. Burnout includes emotional exhaustion, losing interest in work, and losing interest in life. It is often an extension of severe stress. The approach to treatment is two-fold: external and internal. It is hard to change a work culture, but if done top-down, like Mark Bertolini did from 2010 to 2018 at Aetna, it can happen. His was personal. As a result of a severe ski accident and incomplete modern medical care, Mark changed his attitude on life, leadership and wellbeing of employees. Internal change involves mental health self-care cultivating resilience, healthy self-confidence, and self-compassion. AIMIcare offers multiple guidance on a variety of approaches to lessen burnout. Taking better care of ourselves is key. Remembering everything you did at the end of the day rather than just the bad stuff, and celebrating the good stuff. Reducing slightly self-expectations near perfection prevents us from failing regularly. Enjoying people and activities outside of work brings some added joy, when joy is nearly absent from our lives.
