A big win for all NHS patients - Healthwatch is saved!

My local @healthwatchbh.bsky.social alerted me to these plans over a year ago and I took action with the first motion in Parliament.

For these vital local patient voices we had to win - and today we have!

*Healthwatch-es, plural really, as it's a network of local Healthwatch bodies across England, also covering social care services (as a helpful commenter has noted)

Good news for Healthwatch!

In June 2025, we stood alongside Healthwatch organisations across the country, urging the Government to think again about plans to abolish the network.

We're delighted that @healthwatchengland.bsky.social and local Healthwatch orgs will now be retained.

Keeping Healthwatch England is a positive step. The challenge now is ensuring any strengthened model has the powers, resources and independence needed to influence change and improve care.

Very welcome. Abolishing local Healthwatch was a particularly stupid proposal. Now local Healthwatch can focus on being an independent voice for Patients and public in health and social care.

Sharing feedback about your care shouldn't be scary. That's why we've made it easy to tell us about your NHS and social care experiences.

This Halloween, don't be afraid to tell us what's going well, what isn't, and how your care could be improved. https://www.healthwatch.co.uk/have-your-say

👏 Thank you to colleagues who backed our letter, and to Healthwatch staff and volunteers who kept going through the uncertainty.

👇 Now let's make sure the "strengthened" part happens.

I used to work for Healthwatch Hertfordshire, my wife still does. While I do think the organisation - both on a local and national level - has many flaws, overall an independent body to amplify the patient voice is incredibly important. This is very good news.
