Yeah, I guess so. But at that point you may as well just make an identical fan game and work from there. You don’t need the exact 8 bit code from the Game Boy to produce a game that looks and plays like it.
For example, this isn’t a Kingdom Hearts mod, it’s been recreated from the ground up:

i just don't think "heartslike" can really be a genre when every kingdom hearts game plays differently like just say you're inspired by a particular KH game at that point
